He was one of my favorite Polish actors…Stanislaw Mikulski<\/strong>, who played fictional WWII agent Hans Kloss in one of Poland’s biggest TV hits of the communist era (“Stawka wi\u0119ksza ni\u017c \u017cycie”), died on Thursday morning aged 85.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Stawka wi\u0119ksza ni\u017c \u017cycie” (More Than Life at Stake,\u00a0Stakes Larger Than Life\u00a0or\u00a0Playing for High Stakes), a very popular in Poland\u00a0Polish\u00a0black and white\u00a0TV series\u00a0about the adventures of a Polish\u00a0secret agent,\u00a0Hans Kloss, who acts as adouble agent\u00a0in the\u00a0Abwehr\u00a0during\u00a0Second World War\u00a0in\u00a0occupied Poland.<\/p>\n

The series was filmed from March 1967 to October 1968. There were 18 episodes, 9 of which were directed by\u00a0Janusz Morgenstern\u00a0and the other 9 by\u00a0Andrzej Konic.<\/p>\n

It became popular also in other countries, especially in former\u00a0Czechoslovakia.<\/p>\n

The premise of the series was that Pole Stanis\u0142aw Kolicki<\/strong>, a lookalike of Nazi officer Hans Kloss<\/strong>, would be sent to carry out a series of daring acts of subversion on behalf of Soviet intelligence. According to some historians, the character of Kolicki was loosely based on Artur Jastrz\u0119bski<\/strong>, a Polish communist with German roots who was recruited by Soviet intelligence in 1941. Prior to the show, Mikulski had played supporting roles in films by directors such as Andrzej Wajda (Kanal) and Tadeusz Chmielewski (Ewa Wants to Sleep). Although the Kloss role brought Mikulski unprecedented success, to avoid being typecast he began to spend more time working in the theatre. In 2012, Mikulski reprised his role as Kolicki\/Kloss in a silver screen sequel directed by Patryk Vega.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
