We\u2019ve managed to survive another year! Doesn’t it feel great?
\nAnd what are your plany sylwestrowe<\/strong> (new year\u2019s eve plans)?
\nI\u2019m simply going to stay home with my family \u2013 Ja bed\u0119 siedzie\u0107 w domu z rodzin\u0105.
\nNa \u017cadn\u0105 imprez\u0119 nie idziemy.<\/strong> \u2013 We\u2019re not going to any party.<\/p>\n

And while we\u2019re on the subject of party, let’s quickly (before we all concentrate on more important things \u2013 like if we have enough champagne stocked up to welcome the new decade) to take a look at this word.<\/p>\n

For most Polish speakers, this word \u201cparty\u201d is a no-brainer. We know it means \u201cimpreza<\/strong>\u201d, \u201czabawa<\/strong>\u201d, and similar – any event involving people, fun and most likely \u2013 alcohol.<\/p>\n

Yet many foreigners I\u2019ve encountered insist on translating this word as \u201cprzyj\u0119cie<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n

And in a way, it\u2019s true, a party can be a przyj\u0119cie<\/strong>, as well. Especially when we\u2019re talking about a dinner party where the participants sit around in a dignified manner and engage in classy small talk while sipping wine and eating fancy little canapes (with caviar – z kawiorem<\/strong>). Or whatever, I don\u2019t go to very many dinner parties these days. That\u2019s definitely not an impreza<\/strong>, or zabawa<\/strong>. That’s a 100% przyj\u0119cie<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It gets even goofier, when you start talking about \u201cparty\u201d as a verb. As in \u201cshe likes to party.\u201d That can be translated as \u201cona lubi imprezowa\u0107<\/strong>\u201d, which in my mind somehow always immediately conjures up an image of a drunken female upchucking in the middle of the street on a Saturday night.
\nOr you can say that \u201cona lubi si\u0119 bawi\u0107<\/strong>\u201d, which is infinitely less harsh than \u201cona lubi imprezowa\u0107<\/strong>\u201d. However, \u201cona lubi si\u0119 bawi\u0107<\/strong>\u201d can also mean that she simply likes to have a good time. Like me.<\/p>\n

So, can you have a good time without partying? Czy mo\u017cna dobrze si\u0119 bawi\u0107 bez imprezowania<\/strong>?<\/p>\n

I\u2019m going to test it out tonight!<\/p>\n
