It was one of the four victorious Polish insurrections.<\/p>\n<p>Greater Poland (<strong>Wielkopolska<\/strong>) was taken by Prussia, the predecessor of a unified Germany, as one of the partitions of Poland.<\/p>\n<p>Poles in this region protested against the Prussian and German policy of enforcing German culture and language but tried to achieve change using non-violent methods.\u00a0An example of this was a protest by children from Wrze\u015bnia (about 40km east of Pozna\u0144), who protested against having to pray in the German language in the early 20th century. Another was the history of \u201cDrzyma\u0142a\u2019s wagon,\u201d which had been trying to bypass German law by moving his wagon, where he lived, just a slight amount every day and claiming that it is was not a building but a moving vehicle, so the laws concerning construction and building did not apply to him.<\/p>\n<p>In late 1918, Germany loosened the policy on the occupied lands. Circumstances such as Germany\u2019s defeat in WWI, the abdication of Emperor Wilhelm II and the general atmosphere of revolution encouraged people to begin their fight for freedom.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7804\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter post-item__attachment\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2018\/12\/uprising-1793512_1920.jpg\" aria-label=\"Uprising 1793512 1920 1024x1009\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7804\" class=\"wp-image-7804 size-large\"  alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1009\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2018\/12\/uprising-1793512_1920-1024x1009.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2018\/12\/uprising-1793512_1920-1024x1009.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2018\/12\/uprising-1793512_1920-350x345.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2018\/12\/uprising-1793512_1920-768x756.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2018\/12\/uprising-1793512_1920.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7804\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image courtesy pixabay.com<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The uprising broke out on <strong>December 27th, 1918<\/strong> in <span class=\"s2\">Pozna\u0144<\/span>, after a patriotic speech by <strong><span class=\"s2\">Ignacy Paderewski<\/span>, Polish prime minister at that time, and a famous pianist.\u00a0<\/strong>The uprising forces consisted of members of the <span class=\"s2\">Polish Military Organization<\/span> of the <span class=\"s2\">Prussian Partition<\/span>, who started to form the <strong><i>Stra\u017c Obywatelska<\/i><\/strong> (Citizen\u2019s Guard), later renamed as <strong><i>Stra\u017c Ludowa<\/i><\/strong> (People\u2019s Guard) and many volunteers\u2014mainly veterans of <span class=\"s3\">World War I<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The timing of the uprising was fortuitous for the insurgents, as between October 1918 and the first months of 1919, internal conflict had weakened Germany, with soldiers and sailors engaged in mutinous actions against the monarchy and the officer corps. Demoralized by the signing of an armistice on November 11th, 1918, the new German government was further embroiled in subduing the <span class=\"s2\">German Revolution<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">By January 15th, 1919, the Polish forces took control of most of the <span class=\"s2\">Province of Posen<\/span>, and engaged in heavy fighting with the regular German army and the forces of the <span class=\"s4\">Grenzschutz<\/span>, up until the renewal of the truce between the <span class=\"s2\">Entente<\/span>and Germany on February 16th, which affected the Wielkopolska or Posen Province part of the front line. Skirmishes continued, however, until the signing of the <span class=\"s2\">Treaty of Versailles<\/span> on June 28th, 1919.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Greater Poland Uprising of 1918-1919 was one of the four Polish insurrections that can be considered as victorious.
