The oldest decorated eggs discovered so far come from the 10th century. They were unearthed during the archaeological excavations in <strong>Ostr\u00f3wek,\u00a0<\/strong>near the city of Opole.<\/p>\n<p>The word \u2018pisanki\u2019 is commonly used to name all the \u2018easter eggs\u2019 in Poland nowadays, but that word was originally used to name only one (the oldest) type\u00a0of the decorated eggs. <strong>It is derived from the verb\u00a0&#8220;pisa\u0107&#8221; \u2013 to write<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The very traditional <strong>pisanki<\/strong> are created by drawing on the eggs with the melted wax (natural beeswax is the best for this method) and then dipping them into dyes. This method is generally known as <i>batik<\/i>\u00a0(method of dyeing\u00a0textiles).
