Our ancestors looked at the sky, curious about what was beyond our planet with the same fervor (<strong>zapa\u0142<\/strong>) as we do today.<\/p>\n<p>While many different cultures around the world made great advances in astronomy, Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus (<strong>Miko\u0142aj Kopernik<\/strong>) is probably the most famous out of all. The father of modern astronomy, he was the first modern European scientist to propose that Earth and other planets revolve around the sun. Image by Mateusz_foto from Pixabay<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He was born on February 19th, 1473, in <strong>Toru\u0144<\/strong>, a city in north-central Poland on the Vistula River.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kopernik<\/strong> was a mathematician (<span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"pl\"><strong>matematyk<\/strong>)<\/span>, astronomer (<strong>astronom<\/strong>), physician (<strong>lekarz<\/strong>),\u00a0classical scholar (<span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"pl\"><strong>klasyczny uczony<\/strong>)<\/span>, translator (<strong>t\u0142umacz<\/strong>), artist (<strong>artysta<\/strong>), Catholic cleric (<strong>duchowny katolicki<\/strong>),quadrilingual polyglot (<span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"pl\"><strong>czteroj\u0119zyczny poliglota<\/strong>)<\/span>, governor (<strong>gubernator<\/strong>),\u00a0jurist (<strong>prawnik<\/strong>), military leader (<span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"pl\"><strong>dow\u00f3dca wojskowy<\/strong>)<\/span>, diplomat (<strong>dyplomata<\/strong>) and economist (<strong>ekonomista<\/strong>). Wow!!! Among all of these, astronomy figured as little more than an avocation and it was that field that he made his mark upon the world.<\/p>\n<p>Interesting fact: Poland celebrates <strong>Polish Science Day<\/strong> on <strong>February 19th<\/strong>.
