The voivodeship is<\/span>\u00a0called in Polish wojew\u00f3dztwo\u00a0<\/b><\/i>(plural wojew\u00f3dztwa<\/i><\/strong>). Did you know how many of these\u00a0high-level administrative subdivisions are in Poland?\u00a0<\/span>The Polish local government reforms<\/span> adopted in 1998, which went into effect on January 1st 1999, created sixteen<\/strong> new voivodeships. These replaced the 49 former voivodeships<\/span> that had existed from July 1st. 1975.<\/p>\n

Today’s voivodeships are mostly named after historical and geographical regions (historyczne i geograficzne regiony<\/strong>), while those prior to 1998 generally took their names from the cities on which they were centered.<\/p>\n

Each of 16 voivodeships is\u00a0<\/span>made up of a number of powiaty<\/strong>,<\/em> smaller territorial divisions comparable to counties. The powiaty<\/strong> in turn contain a number of gminy<\/strong>\u00a0(municipalities) which are Poland\u2019s smallest administrative divisions.<\/p>\n

Wojew\u00f3dztwa<\/strong> (vou-yeah-voo-tz-tfah) name comes from the phrase\u00a0 wodzi\u0107\u00a0woje\u00a0<\/strong>, meaning “to lead warriors”. The name points to the fact that the head of a voivodeship – wojewoda<\/strong>, was a leading warrior back in the older days.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Of course now, he\/she doesn’t have to lead warriors. Instead his\/hers job is to perform peaceful administrative functions.<\/p>\n
