Like those learning the equivalent English verbs to take and to bring, the verbs levar<\/em> and trazer<\/em> can sometimes be a little confusing, especially since we can translate levar<\/em> as both to take and to bring in English. Here are some examples that will help you remember how to distinguish the two.<\/p>\n

For the purposes of simplification, think of it this way:<\/p>\n

levar<\/strong> = to take [a movement away from the speaker\/place of origin]<\/p>\n

Use with: l\u00e1\/ali<\/p>\n

trazer<\/strong> = to bring [a movement towards the speaker\/place of origin]<\/p>\n

Use with: aqui<\/p>\n

Examples<\/span><\/p>\n

Eu vou levar o computador l\u00e1.<\/em> I’m going to take the computer there.<\/p>\n

Ela vai trazer o celular aqui.<\/em> She’s going to bring the cell phone here.<\/p>\n

Levei o dinheiro l\u00e1 <\/em>para pagar a conta.<\/em> I took the money there to pay the bill.<\/p>\n

Foi ele que trouxe a roupa suja aqui.<\/em> He was the one who brought the dirty clothes here.<\/p>\n

Eu levei o bolo para a festa. <\/em>I took a cake to the party.<\/p>\n

Minha tia trouxe a feijoada para a minha festa.<\/em> My aunt brought feijoada to my party.<\/p>\n

Vou levar um presente para meu amigo no Brasil. Quando ele vier aos Estados Unidos, ele vai trazer um presente para mim. <\/em>I’m going to take a present to my friend in Brazil. When he comes to the US, he’s going to bring me a present.<\/p>\n
