{"id":1204,"date":"2010-06-09T08:00:50","date_gmt":"2010-06-09T08:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/?p=1204"},"modified":"2010-06-09T03:04:46","modified_gmt":"2010-06-09T03:04:46","slug":"poetry-machado-de-assis-circulo-vicioso","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/poetry-machado-de-assis-circulo-vicioso\/","title":{"rendered":"Poetry in Portuguese | &#8220;C\u00edrculo Vicioso&#8221; by Machado de Assis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m reading a book called, &#8220;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.olivreiro.com.br\/livro\/2321275-como-transformar-defeitos-em-virtudes\">Como Transformar Defeitos em Virtudes<\/a><\/em>,&#8221; and it claims to be a good humored view on the seven deadly sins&#8230; which so far it is! \u00a0And each chapter for each sin starts off with a poem.<\/p>\n<p>The first chapter starts off with a poem by Machado de Assis, one of Brazil&#8217;s greatest writers of all time, called &#8220;C\u00edrculo Vicioso.&#8221; \u00a0Can you tell me from reading the poem below which sin it&#8217;s talking about and what the name of that sin would be in Portuguese?<\/p>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" width=\"510\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"236\" valign=\"top\">Bailando no ar,   gemia inquieto vaga-lume:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Quem me dera que   fosse aquela loura estrela,<\/p>\n<p>que arde no eterno   azul, como uma eterna vela!<\/p>\n<p>Mas a estrela,   fitando a lua, com ci\u00fame:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Pudesse eu copiar   o transparente lume,<\/p>\n<p>que, da grega   coluna \u00e1 g\u00f3tica janela,<\/p>\n<p>contemplou,   suspirosa, a fronte amada e bela !<\/p>\n<p>Mas a lua, fitando   o sol, com azedume:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Misera ! tivesse   eu aquela enorme, aquela<\/p>\n<p>claridade imortal,   que toda a luz resume !<\/p>\n<p>Mas o sol,   inclinando a rutila capela:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Pesa-me esta   brilhante aureola de nume&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Enfara-me esta azul   e desmedida umbela&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Porque n\u00e3o nasci eu   um simples vaga-lume?<\/td>\n<td width=\"274\" valign=\"top\">Dancing in the air,   the firefly moaned restlessly:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; How I wish I was   that blonde \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0star,<\/p>\n<p>That burns in the eternal blue, live an infinite \u00a0candle!<\/p>\n<p>But the star,   gazing at the moon jealously:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Who am I to copy   the transparent light,<\/p>\n<p>That from the Greek   column to the gothic window, \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Contemplated,   sighing, forehead beloved and beautiful!<\/p>\n<p>But the moon,   gazing at the sun, sourly:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Misery! Had I   that huge, \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0that<\/p>\n<p>Immortal   brightness, in which all live is summarized!<\/p>\n<p>But the sun,   tilting its shining chapel:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; This bright halo   weighs down upon \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 me&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>This blue and   unmeasurable umbrella sickens me&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Why wasn\u2019t I born a   simple firefly?<span style=\"font-size: 13px;line-height: 19px\"> <\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"line-height: normal\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m reading a book called, &#8220;Como Transformar Defeitos em Virtudes,&#8221; and it claims to be a good humored view on the seven deadly sins&#8230; which so far it is! \u00a0And each chapter for each sin starts off with a poem.
