Today Brazil and Portugal battle it out on the field in the World Cup, and although both countries are “rivals,” on the grass, and there is a friendly rivalry in many other aspects amongst the two nations, every once in a while, there’s a person or happening that’s just as important to one as it is to the other. \u00a0Last week, Jos\u00e9 Saramago, a Portuguese writer, passed away. \u00a0And for one day – I saw Brazilians talking about something other than the World Cup. \u00a0Most famous for his book, Ensaio Sobre a Cegueira<\/em>, in English, Blindness<\/em> (yes, the movie was based on his book!); he was also the only<\/em> lusophone to win a Nobel Prize in Literature for his book, O Evangelho Segundo Jesus Cristo <\/em>(“The Gospel According to Jesus Christ”). \u00a0Despite his fervent communist and atheist views (which were so controversial he exiled himself from Portugal), his work is so powerful that I know in Brazil, students are taught to recite his poetry in classrooms.<\/p>\n

So since Saramago’s such an important figure in the Portuguese language, I’d like to pay a Portuguese Blog<\/em> homage to him with a few [simples to read] quotes by him for you guys!<\/p>\n

Gostar \u00e9 provavelmente a melhor maneira de ter, ter deve ser a pior maneira de gostar.<\/em><\/p>\n

Todos sabemos que cada dia que nasce \u00e9 o primeiro para uns e ser\u00e1 o \u00faltimo para outros e que, para a maioria, \u00e9 s\u00f3 um dia mais.<\/em><\/p>\n

N\u00e3o tenhamos pressa, mas n\u00e3o percamos tempo.<\/em><\/p>\n

De que adianta falar de motivos, \u00e0s vezes basta um s\u00f3, \u00e0s vezes nem juntando todos.<\/em><\/p>\n

Se podes olhar, v\u00ea. Se podes ver, repara.<\/em><\/p>\n

Dentro de n\u00f3s h\u00e1 uma coisa que n\u00e3o tem nome, essa coisa \u00e9 o que somos.<\/em><\/p>\n

Sempre chega a hora em que descobrimos que sab\u00edamos muito mais do que antes julg\u00e1vamos.<\/em><\/p>\n

Mesmo que a rota da minha vida me conduza a uma estrela, nem por isso fui dispensado de percorrer os caminhos do mundo.<\/em><\/p>\n

N\u00e3o sou um ateu total, todos os dias tento encontrar um sinal de Deus, mas infelizmente n\u00e3o o encontro.<\/em><\/p>\n
