{"id":154,"date":"2008-02-20T18:30:30","date_gmt":"2008-02-20T22:30:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/?p=154"},"modified":"2014-07-18T17:21:25","modified_gmt":"2014-07-18T17:21:25","slug":"gente-boa-contest-in-rio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/gente-boa-contest-in-rio\/","title":{"rendered":"Gente Boa Contest in Rio"},"content":{"rendered":"<div align=\"center\">\n<div align=\"left\">One of Brazil&#8217;s most important newspapers, O Globo, is sponsoring a contest in Rio de Janeiro to pick Rio&#8217;s most popular <em>figura<\/em>, which translates best as a &#8220;colorful character.&#8221; For five years, the newspaper has had an annual competition to decide which Carioca (a person who lives in Rio) is the most popular colorful character.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">The contest is called <i>Carioca <\/i><em>Gente Boa<\/em>, which is also a popular samba song. <em>Gente boa<\/em> literally translates as &#8220;good people,&#8221; as in &#8220;he&#8217;s good people,&#8221; but in Brazilian Portuguese it has a deeper meaning, indicating that the person isn&#8217;t just friendly or kind, but is also happy, enthusiastic, and full of life. According to Globo, Rio has so many <i>gente boa<\/i> that the Carioca is considered the eighth wonder of Rio.<\/div>\n<p>The competition has fourteen contestants, which consist of local celebrities who have gained their reputation through a unique talent or attribute, similar to someone like the Naked Cowboy in New York City.<\/p>\n<div align=\"right\"><\/div>\n<p>Some of the contestants include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Renato Louren\u00e7o, a <em>gari<\/em>, or street cleaner. And a proud street cleaner!
