forr\u00f3 (my mom was more of an 80\u2019s rock and Roberto Carlos girl).\u00a0 One instrument that\u2019s always stuck out to me in Brazilian folk music is the <em>viola caipira<\/em>.\u00a0 Unlike the \u201cviola\u201d you\u2019re thinking of, the <em>viola (<\/em>pronounced vee-aw-lah), is a 10 string 5 course guitar.\u00a0 Similar to a flamenco guitar, the strings are plucked by the musician\u2019s fingers. <em>Caipira<\/em> is probably the equivalent of \u201chillybilly,\u201d and so it\u2019s mostly used in Brazilian country music, but you\u2019ll also find it in other styles.<\/p>\n<p>Although it\u2019s a traditional instrument and you\u2019d imagine \u201cold\u201d people playing it or listening to viola music, my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.luizeduardoerafael.com\/\">18 year old cousin<\/a> has taken on the <em>viola<\/em> amongst other string instruments and is playing sertanejo sets at a couple of bars here in S\u00e3o Paulo with his friend which makes me think of my papai and my childhood!<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a song by Almir Sater, one of the <em>grande violeiros<\/em>, from Brazil, playing his <em>Um Violeiro Toca<\/em>, which I had to translate for you because the lyrics are beautiful!<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Almir Sater - 4\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9pjN0d_q2Yo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; dos bichos, v\u00e3o   ficando entristecidos<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Rebrilham neles lembran\u00e7as dos amores   esquecidos.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Quando o amor come\u00e7a, nossa alegria chama, <\/em><em>e um violeiro toca em nossa cama.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Ent\u00e3o os &#8220;\u00f3io&#8221; dos bichos, s\u00e3o os   olhos de quem ama<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Pois a natureza \u00e9 isso, sem medo, nem d\u00f3, nem   drama<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Tudo \u00e9 sert\u00e3o, tudo \u00e9 paix\u00e3o, se o violeiro   toca. <\/em><em>A viola, o violeiro e o amor se tocam&#8230;<\/em><\/td>\n<td width=\"265\" valign=\"top\">When a star falls in the dark of the   night, and a <em>violeiro<\/em> plays his heartbreak.<\/p>\n<p>The animals\u2019 eyes brighten, and stars from the moonlit backwoods   brighten them again.<\/p>\n<p>When love ends, lost on a corner,\u00a0And a <em>violeiro<\/em> plays its bell.\u00a0The animals\u2019 eyes become saddened<\/p>\n<p>And memories of forgotten loves brighten   them again.<\/p>\n<p>When love begins, our happiness calls,\u00a0And a <em>violeiro<\/em> plays in our bed.<\/p>\n<p>And so the animals\u2019 eyes are the eyes of   who loves<\/p>\n<p>Because that is what nature is, no fear,   no pity, no drama<\/p>\n<p>All is backwoods, all is love, if the <em>violeiro <\/em>plays.\u00a0The <em>viola<\/em>,   the <em>violeiro<\/em> and love play each   other.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I grew up to my dad listening to Brazilian folk music, especially \u201cold school\u201d sertanejo &amp;
