{"id":1937,"date":"2011-01-17T08:17:51","date_gmt":"2011-01-17T08:17:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/?p=1937"},"modified":"2014-07-24T17:17:45","modified_gmt":"2014-07-24T17:17:45","slug":"how-to-order-coffee-in-brazil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/how-to-order-coffee-in-brazil\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Order Coffee in Brazil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since it&#8217;s Monday morning, let&#8217;s talk coffee, shall we?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>For those of you who are big coffee drinkers, the best advice I can give you for when you get to Brazil and walk into a corner <em>padaria <\/em>is&#8230; take what you can get. Depending on where you are, there are very limited choices in what you can order. \u00a0In some places, the coffee&#8217;s really strong and they serve sugar separately. \u00a0In others, the coffee&#8217;s super weak and filled with sugar&#8230; and a little of everything in between. \u00a0Each state and region has its different way of drinking coffee, so in respect for the region you&#8217;re in &#8211; if you&#8217;re not making coffee at home&#8230; just drink it!<\/p>\n<p>That being said&#8230; if you have options, <em>in general<\/em>, you can get by with the following vocabulary:<\/p>\n<p><em>caf\u00e9zinho\/expresso\/caf\u00e9 curto &#8211; <\/em>This is usually a cup of coffee in an expresso cup. \u00a0It may or may not be an expresso. \u00a0If an expresso is what you really want, to be on the safe side, order a <em>caf\u00e9zinho expresso<\/em>, or just <em>um expresso. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>m\u00e9dia\/caf\u00e9 com leite &#8211; <\/em>Different places will say different things. \u00a0In most places, a <em>caf\u00e9 com leite<\/em>, will be a tea cup sized coffee with more milk than coffee. \u00a0 It also may or may not come with sugar, so if you prefer it without, make sure to ask for <em>um caf\u00e9 com leite sem a\u00e7\u00facar! <\/em>In some places, you can just order a <em>m\u00e9dia<\/em>, and they&#8217;ll bring you the same thing.<\/p>\n<p><em>caf\u00e9 duplo\/pingado &#8211; <\/em>This is like a big\u00a0<em>m\u00e9dia! <\/em>And the same rules apply. \u00a0Also, if you order a <em>pingado<\/em> and the person stares at you like you&#8217;re crazy, go for a <em>caf\u00e9 duplo<\/em>, or vice versa \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><em>capuccino &#8211; <\/em>In some places this is the same thing as a cappuccino you&#8217;d find in the US, but some coffee shops (in SP at least) will add chocolate to their <em>capuccinos<\/em>! (I highly recommend the one from <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kopenhagen.com.br\/site\/coffee\/\">Kopenhagen<\/a><\/em>, mmm mmm yummy and worth the R$9!)<\/p>\n<p>As for vocabulary, I think that&#8217;s it&#8230; Depending on where you go &#8211; if it&#8217;s a small restaurant, forget the options of <em>descafeinado (<\/em>decaf)<em>, leite desnatado <\/em>(skim milk) or <em>leite de soja <\/em>(soy milk). \u00a0That&#8217;s just <em>frescuragem. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re going for coffee, don&#8217;t forget to order a <em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/brazilian-recipes-baking-pao-de-queijo\/\">p\u00e3o de queijo<\/a> <\/em>to dip in your <em>caf\u00e9 com leite. <\/em>And if you&#8217;re ordering coffee with dessert, order a <em>pudim de leite<\/em> with it! \ud83d\ude42 Oh!
