Since I live in S\u00e3o Paulo, I know more about the S\u00e3o Paulo samba schools than the Rio schools. \u00a0Also, \u00a0since S\u00e3o Paulo & Rio de Janeiro have similiar Carnaval <\/em>experiences, I’m going to use this post to talk about the samba school desfiles<\/em> and another post to talk about Rio’s street blocos<\/em>, which you’ll also find in S\u00e3o Paulo, but usually before Carnaval<\/em> here and during in Rio!<\/p>\n

This year, I’ve been going to a lot of samba school rehearsals, or ensaios de escola de samba. <\/em>When I talk about “samba schools,” I don’t mean I’m there to learn to samba. I had a lost in translation moment with a friend who was here from New York. \u00a0When we got to the rehearsal, she asked when the classes started \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

These rehearsals are for the escolas<\/em>, which are more like, “clubs,” that compete during Carnaval <\/em>parades on the weekend and days before ter\u00e7a-feira de Carnaval. <\/em>Each school parades with a different theme, however, there’s usually an overall theme they need to follow, and the entire parade is done repeating the same song written by the school each year. \u00a0This song is called an enredo<\/em>, and it’s sung by all the components of the parade. \u00a0Hence weekly and sometimes biweekly rehearsals.<\/p>\n
