{"id":2323,"date":"2011-05-30T09:00:52","date_gmt":"2011-05-30T09:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/?p=2323"},"modified":"2011-05-29T13:12:24","modified_gmt":"2011-05-29T13:12:24","slug":"brazilian-hip-hop-emicida","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/brazilian-hip-hop-emicida\/","title":{"rendered":"Brazilian Hip Hop &#8211; Emicida"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday I went to a huge hip hop festival here in S\u00e3o Paulo, with international names like John Legend, Ja Rule, &amp; The Roots, but also some Brazilian independent artists like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xyo10IfOqFw&amp;feature=related\">Copacabana Club<\/a> (which isn&#8217;t a hip hop band, but they&#8217;re pretty good!) &amp; then some big name Brazilian hip hop artists. I&#8217;m actually pretty embarrassed to say as much as I &lt;3 hip hop, Brazilian rap has never really been interesting to me&#8230; until some of my friends here introduced me to some pretty good artists like Emicida, who played last night and was awesome!<\/p>\n<p>Here are 2 videos (the regular &amp; acoustic version &#8211; if you read this blog enough, you&#8217;ll know I love anything acoustic), and since rap \u00a0lyrics are so hard to translate, I&#8217;ll give you the translations for the &#8220;bigger&#8221; and slang words \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Emicida na Tv Trama - A Cada Vento\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KRpsHWp9xDY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Now listen again and watch out for some slang \u00a0&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><em>dim &#8211; <\/em>short for\u00a0<em>dim-dim<\/em> which is a slang word for money<\/p>\n<p><em>vagando &#8211; <\/em>not necessarily a slang word, but it comes from the verb\u00a0<em>vagar<\/em>, which means to not do anything with your time,\u00a0<em>vagabundear. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>orix\u00e1 &#8211; <\/em>comes from\u00a0<em>Umbanda<\/em>, an Afro-Brazilian religion, and in\u00a0<em>Umbanda<\/em> (correct me if I&#8217;m wrong!), the\u00a0<em>orix\u00e1s<\/em> are like the gods of the religion. In the song he&#8217;s saying each and every\u00a0<em>orix\u00e1<\/em> is protecting him.<\/p>\n<p><em>bus\u00e3o &#8211; <\/em>is the paulista slang word for\u00a0<em>onibus<\/em>, or bus.<\/p>\n<p><em>matrix &#8211; <\/em>I&#8217;m not 100% sure on this one, but &#8220;<em>entrar na matrix<\/em>&#8221; &#8211; can mean to get high, so here he might be saying that by listening to his music, he won&#8217;t get into drugs? But\u00a0<em>matrix<\/em> here could all be just to get sucked in to a &#8220;matrix&#8221; he doesn&#8217;t want to get into.<\/p>\n<p><em>tropa &#8211; <\/em>for those Elite Squad fans, here\u00a0<em>tropa<\/em> is like a group of friends.<\/p>\n<p><em>c\u00ea &#8211; <\/em>is short for &#8220;voc\u00ea&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>boot &#8211; <\/em>sneakers or shoes<\/p>\n<p><em>neguim &#8211; <\/em>is short for\u00a0<em>neguinho<\/em> which is a slang for\u00a0<em>negro<\/em> or just an endearing word for a friend or loved one. My brother, for example, has pretty dark skin and my mom calls him\u00a0<em>neguinho<\/em>. \u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0<em><strong>not<\/strong><\/em> considered racist here or in the song. In the song he&#8217;s just saying it as if he were saying, &#8220;bro.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>t\u00f4 &#8211; <\/em>is short for\u00a0<em>estou, <\/em>which comes from the verb\u00a0<em>estar.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>pra &#8211; <\/em>is short for\u00a0<em>para<\/em>, but can also be used regularly. It is not incorrect to say\u00a0<em>pra<\/em>, but also not encouraged formally.<\/p>\n<p><em>quebrada &#8211; <\/em>means &#8220;streets&#8221; \u00a0or &#8220;hood&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>tio &#8211; <\/em>we all know this means uncle, but here he&#8217;s referring to just anyone who&#8217;s listening.
