One thing I always forget the rule to in Portuguese is the difference between abaixo <\/em>and a baixo<\/em>. The both sound the same, and they both essentially mean the same (or do they?!). And because of this, I always find myself asking my coworkers time and again, “Ok, I know I’ve asked you this before, but… for this sentence, do I use <\/em>abaixo or <\/em>a baixo?”<\/em><\/p>\n

And so I finally decided to look it up myself to see if it would stick! It’s really, quite simple. Hope this helps you all as well \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

Abaixo – <\/em><\/strong>with all the letters together, abaixo<\/em>\u00a0means under or below. It \u00a0speaks to something that is positioned in an inferior position to something else. It is an adverb.<\/p>\n

Examples –<\/p>\n

Segue as minhas respostas abaixo. = <\/em>My responses are below.<\/p>\n

A padaria fica logo abaixo do meu apartamento = <\/em>The bakery is right under my apartment.<\/p>\n

Fun Fact:<\/span>\u00a0Abaixo Assinado<\/em>\u00a0is the term for “Petition,” and means, “Signed below,” which is what a petition is, no?<\/p>\n

A baixo – <\/em><\/strong>Separated after the “a,” is always used with a “from above” \u00a0type reference. It means, \u00a0essentially, down or bottom. It is an adverbial phrase.<\/p>\n

Examples –<\/p>\n

Eu li aquela carta de cima a baixo e n\u00e3o encontrei nada = <\/em>I read that letter from top to bottom and didn’t find anything.<\/p>\n

Ele me olhou de cima a baixo, fiquei muito contrangida = <\/em>He looked me up and down, I felt very awkward.<\/p>\n
