He&#8217;s famous for writing songs considered dangerous by Brazil&#8217;s military dictatorship and using word play to express criticism of the regime. He&#8217;s written eight books and five plays, as well as writing several screenplays.<\/p>\n<p>Read about Buarque&#8217;s early life in Portuguese from an <a href=\"http:\/\/mpbzailda.blogspot.com\/2009\/01\/chico-buarque-biografia.html\" target=\"_blank\">MPB fan site<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Filho do historiador S\u00e9rgio Buarque de Hollanda, iniciou sua carreira na d\u00e9cada de 1960, destacando-se em 1966, quando venceu, com a can\u00e7\u00e3o A Banda, o Festival de M\u00fasica Popular Brasileira. Em 1969, com a crescente repress\u00e3o da ditadura militar no Brasil, se auto-exilou na It\u00e1lia, tornando-se, ao retornar, um dos artistas mais ativos na cr\u00edtica pol\u00edtica e pela democratiza\u00e7\u00e3o do Brasil. Na carreira liter\u00e1ria, foi ganhador do Pr\u00eamio Jabuti, pelo livro Budapeste, lan\u00e7ado em 2004.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Em 1946, passou a morar em S\u00e3o Paulo, onde o pai assumira a dire\u00e7\u00e3o do Museu do Ipiranga. Sempre revelou interesses pela m\u00fasica &#8211; interesse que foi bastante refor\u00e7ado pela conviv\u00eancia com intelectuais como Vinicius de Moraes e Paulo Vanzolini.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Em 1953, S\u00e9rgio Buarque de Holanda foi convidado para lecionar na Universidade de Roma, consequentemente, a fam\u00edlia muda-se para a It\u00e1lia. Chico torna-se triling\u00fce, na escola fala ingl\u00eas, e nas ruas, italiano. Nessa \u00e9poca, suas primeiras &#8220;marchinhas de carnaval&#8221; s\u00e3o compostas, e, com as irm\u00e3s mais novas, Piiizinha, Cristina e Ana, encenadas.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0De volta ao Brasil, produz suas primeiras cr\u00f4nicas no jornal Verb\u00e2midas, do Col\u00e9gio Santa Cruz, nome criado por ele. Sua primeira apari\u00e7\u00e3o na imprensa n\u00e3o foi cultural, mas policial, publicada, inclusive, no jornal \u00daltima Hora, de S\u00e3o Paulo. Com um amigo, furtou um carro para passear pela madrugada paulista, algo relativamente comum na \u00e9poca. Foi preso. &#8220;Pivetes furtaram um carro: presos&#8221; foi a manchete no dia seguinte com uma a foto de dois menores com tarjas pretas nos olhos.
