There are several (and very useful) expressions with the verb estar<\/strong> (to be) in Portuguese. Let’s learn some of them, shall we?<\/p>\n

Estar a fim de fazer alguma coisa<\/strong> – to feel like doing something<\/p>\n

Estou afim de fazer uma caminhada hoje. Topa?<\/em> [I feel like taking a walk today. You’re in?!?]
\nO que voc\u00ea est\u00e1 a fim de fazer hoje \u00e0 noite?<\/em> [What do you feel like doing tonight?]<\/p>\n

Estar atolado em\/de trabalho<\/strong> – to be swamped with work<\/p>\n

N\u00e3o vou sair para almo\u00e7ar hoje. Estou atolado de trabalho!<\/em> [I’m not going out for lunch today. I’m swamped with work!]
\nPreciso de um descanso. Estou atolado em trabalho desde a semana passada.<\/em> [I need a break. I’ve been swamped with work since last week.]<\/p>\n

Estar de castigo<\/strong> – to be grounded<\/p>\n

N\u00e3o posso sair para brincar. Estou de castigo.<\/em> [I can’t go out and play. I’m grounded.]
\nJ\u00e1 para o seu quarto, rapazinho! Voc\u00ea est\u00e1 de castigo!<\/em> [Straight to your bedroom, young man! You’re grounded!]<\/p>\n

Estar de licen\u00e7a-maternidade<\/strong> – to be on maternity leave<\/p>\n

A Susan \u00e9st\u00e1 de licen\u00e7a-maternidade.<\/em> [Ela volta para o trabalho em duas semanas. [Susan is on maternity leave. She’ll go back to work in two weeks.]
\nQuando voc\u00ea vai estar de licen\u00e7a-maternidade?<\/em> [When will you be on maternity leave?]<\/p>\n

Estar de ressaca<\/strong> – to have a hangover<\/p>\n

Eu n\u00e3o deveria ter tomado a garrafa de vodka inteira. Estou com uma ressaca hoje!<\/em> [I shouldn’t have drunk the whole bottle of vodka. I have such a hangover today!]
\nCinco caipirinhas de est\u00f4mago vazio? \u00c9 claro que voc\u00ea ia estar de ressaca!<\/em> [Five caipirinhas on an empty stomach? No wonder you have such a hangover!]<\/p>\n

Estar de volta \u00e0 estaca zero<\/strong> – to be back to square one<\/p>\n

Acho que, ap\u00f3s todos os nossos esfor\u00e7os, estamos de volta \u00e0 estaca zero.<\/em> [I guess that after all our efforts, we’re back to square one.]
\nNossa, ferrou tudo! Estamos de volta \u00e0 estaca zero!<\/em> [Man, snafu! We’re back to square one!]<\/p>\n

Estar com a corda no pesco\u00e7o<\/strong> – to be indebted<\/p>\n

Ele precisa vender sua casa rapidamente porque est\u00e1 com a corda no pesco\u00e7o.<\/em> [He needs to sell his house fast because he’s so indebted.]
\nPreciso de dinheiro, como todo mundo, mas n\u00e3o estou com a corda no pesco\u00e7o.<\/em> [I need money, like everybody else, but I’m not so indebted.]<\/p>\n
