\nMeu endere\u00e7o \u00e9 Rua dos Patins, 300, apartamento n\u00famero 215.
\nQuero pedir frango agridoce, yakisoba de camar\u00e3o e uma Coca Cola de 1 litro.
\nQuanto custa?
\nAceita cart\u00e3o de cr\u00e9dito? Ah, n\u00e3o aceita.
\nEnt\u00e3o por favor traga troco para cinquenta reais.
\nVai demorar muito?
\nT\u00e1 bom ent\u00e3o. Obrigado. <\/em><\/p>\n

As I always say, it\u2019s important to use a greeting that reflects the time of day in any conversation, formal or informal. In this case, we say good evening (boa noite<\/em>). In this situation, an order is um pedido. <\/em> We use the conditional of gostar<\/em> (to like), which is a polite way of making a request. This means \u201cI would like to make an order.\u201d<\/p>\n

Next, when making an order, we must give our information, which in this case is our phone number and address. The first statement means: \u201cMy number is 7555-8222,\u201d though in Portuguese, instead of saying number, we literally say \u201ctelephone.\u201d The second statement means: \u201cMy address is 300 Rollerskates Road, apartment number 215.\u201d Note that the word for address is endere\u00e7o<\/em>.<\/p>\n

To make the order, we can use the present tense of querer<\/em>, which means to want, though we can translate quero<\/em> (I want) as I\u2019d like. The verb for \u201cto order\u201d is pedir<\/em>, which also means to ask for. This line translates as: \u201cI\u2019d like to order sweet and sour chicken, shrimp yakisoba, and one liter of Coke.\u201d Note that yakisoba is a Japanese dish made from fried noodles that is extremely popular in Brazil.<\/p>\n

To ask how much the order costs, we ask, \u201cQuanto custa?\u201d This works for any type of purchasing transaction.<\/p>\n

This means, \u201cDo you accept credit cards? Oh, you don\u2019t.\u201d Aceitar<\/em> means to accept, and cart\u00e3o de credito<\/em> means credit card. Note that we use the singular of credit card in Portuguese.<\/p>\n

Since we can\u2019t use a credit card, we\u2019re going to have to use cash. When ordering something over the phone in Brazil, it\u2019s a good idea to ask them ahead of time for the amount of change you\u2019re going to need. So here, we say, \u201cSo please bring change for fifty reais.\u201d Note that we use the subjunctive of trazer<\/em>, which is traga<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Here, we ask, \u201cWill it take long?\u201d The verb demorar<\/em> means to delay, but in this context refers to how much time something will take.<\/p>\n

Finally, we say, \u201cOk then, thanks.\u201d \u201cT\u00e1<\/em>\u201d in t\u00e1 bom<\/em> is short for est\u00e1<\/em>, but the shortened version is more common in colloquial Portuguese when using this particular expression, which means OK or all right.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
