In Portuguese, you can use the word vontade<\/em> (wish, or desire) in a number of different ways. Let’s take a look.<\/p>\n

1. Ficar \u00e0 vontade<\/a><\/strong> – This means make yourself at home. You’ll hear this if you’re in someone’s home or office.<\/p>\n

Bem-vindo! Fique\u00a0\u00e0 vontade. Quer um cafezinho?<\/em> Welcome. Make yourself at home. Do you want a coffee?<\/p>\n

2. Estar com vontade de<\/strong><\/a> – This means, “Are you in the mood to” or “Do you feel like.” Similarly, estar sem vontade<\/em> is to not be in the mood for something.<\/p>\n

Voc\u00ea est\u00e1 com vontade de ir no cinema?<\/em> Do you feel like going to the movies?<\/p>\n

Estou sem vontade de estudar hoje<\/em>. I’m not in the mood to study today.<\/p>\n

3. Que vontade de<\/strong> – This expresses a wish to do something, roughly: “What desire to.”<\/p>\n

Que vontade de pular na piscina!<\/em> What desire to jump in the pool!<\/p>\n

Que vontade de comer feijoada!<\/em> What desire to eat feijoada!<\/p>\n

4. vontade<\/strong> – In some cases, you can use vontade<\/em> as “the urge,” particularly when talking about physical needs.<\/p>\n

Ele sempre est\u00e1 com vontade de urinar.<\/em> He always has the urge to pee.<\/p>\n
