Are you ready? <em>Est\u00e3o prontos?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Virar means basically to turn, flip:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>virar<\/strong> \u00e0 esquerda = to <strong>turn<\/strong> left<br \/>\n<strong>virar<\/strong> \u00e0 direita = to <strong>turn<\/strong> right<br \/>\n<strong>virar<\/strong> do avesso = to <strong>turn<\/strong> inside out<br \/>\n<strong>virar<\/strong> de cabe\u00e7a para baixo = to <strong>turn<\/strong> upside down<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Vire<\/strong> suas cartas para cima. = <strong>Turn<\/strong> your cards face up.<br \/>\n<strong>Vira<\/strong> de costas. = <strong>Turn<\/strong> around.<br \/>\n<strong>Vira<\/strong> o vaso para a parede. = <strong>Turn<\/strong> the vase so it faces the wall.<br \/>\n<strong>Vira<\/strong> as panquecas sen\u00e3o elas v\u00e3o queimar. = <strong>Flip<\/strong> the pancakes or else they will burn.<br \/>\nEle <strong>virou<\/strong> a jarra para encher os copos. = He <strong>tipped<\/strong> the pitcher to fill up the glasses.<br \/>\nA lagarta vai <strong>virar<\/strong> uma borboleta. = The caterpillar will <strong>turn<\/strong> into a butterfly.<br \/>\nO mau cheiro <strong>virou<\/strong> meu est\u00f4mago. = The bad smell <strong>turned<\/strong> my stomach.<br \/>\nO beb\u00ea fica sempre <strong>virando<\/strong> na cama. = The baby is always <strong>turning<\/strong> in bed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It can also be translated in some other ways:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Como voc\u00ea <strong>virou<\/strong> professor? = How did you <strong>come to be<\/strong> a teacher?<br \/>\nEla vai <strong>virar uma fera<\/strong> quando vir o que voc\u00ea fez. = He&#8217;ll <strong>get very angry<\/strong> when he sees what you&#8217;ve done.<br \/>\nAssistir seriados americanos agora <strong>virou moda<\/strong> no Brasil. = Watching American series has now <strong>caught on<\/strong> in Brazil.<br \/>\nPor que ela <strong>virou a cara<\/strong> com voc\u00ea? = Why is she <strong>giving you the cold shoulder<\/strong>?<br \/>\nO barco <strong>virou<\/strong>. = The boat <strong>capsized<\/strong>.<br \/>\nEssa hist\u00f3ria n\u00e3o vai <strong>virar nada<\/strong>. = This story will <strong>come to nothing<\/strong>.<br \/>\nO esc\u00e2ndalo do governador <strong>virou not\u00edcia<\/strong>. = The governor&#8217;s scandal <strong>hit the headlines<\/strong>.<br \/>\nQuando eu mais precisava ela <strong>virou as costas para mim<\/strong>. = When I needed her the most she <strong>turned her back on me<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As a reflexive verb, <strong>virar-se<\/strong> has several meanings too:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Minha fam\u00edlia<strong> se virou contra mim<\/strong>. = My family <strong>turned against me<\/strong>.<br \/>\nEu precisava de cinco cadeiras, mas vou ter que <strong>me virar<\/strong> com duas. = I needed five chairs, but I will have to <strong>make do<\/strong> with two.<br \/>\nN\u00e3o quero saber a que horas voc\u00ea foi dormir, <strong>se vira<\/strong> e esteja l\u00e1 \u00e0s sete e meia. = I don&#8217;t care what time you went to bed, <strong>just manage to<\/strong> be there at seven-thirty.<br \/>\nQuando voc\u00ea se mudar para S\u00e3o Paulo voc\u00ea vai ter que <strong>se virar sozinho<\/strong>. = When you move to S\u00e3o Paulo you will have to <strong>fend for yourself<\/strong>.<br \/>\nEles tinham que <strong>se virar<\/strong> com o que ganhavam. = They had to <strong>get by<\/strong> with that whey made.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><strong>Want more free resources to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.transparent.com\/learn-portuguese-brazilian\/\">learn Portuguese<\/a>?
