Virar<\/strong> is a very common verb in Portuguese and in this post I will show you how its several uses. Are you ready? Est\u00e3o prontos?<\/em><\/p>\n

Virar means basically to turn, flip:<\/p>\n

virar<\/strong> \u00e0 esquerda = to turn<\/strong> left
\nvirar<\/strong> \u00e0 direita = to turn<\/strong> right
\nvirar<\/strong> do avesso = to turn<\/strong> inside out
\nvirar<\/strong> de cabe\u00e7a para baixo = to turn<\/strong> upside down<\/p>\n

Vire<\/strong> suas cartas para cima. = Turn<\/strong> your cards face up.
\nVira<\/strong> de costas. = Turn<\/strong> around.
\nVira<\/strong> o vaso para a parede. = Turn<\/strong> the vase so it faces the wall.
\nVira<\/strong> as panquecas sen\u00e3o elas v\u00e3o queimar. = Flip<\/strong> the pancakes or else they will burn.
\nEle virou<\/strong> a jarra para encher os copos. = He tipped<\/strong> the pitcher to fill up the glasses.
\nA lagarta vai virar<\/strong> uma borboleta. = The caterpillar will turn<\/strong> into a butterfly.
\nO mau cheiro virou<\/strong> meu est\u00f4mago. = The bad smell turned<\/strong> my stomach.
\nO beb\u00ea fica sempre virando<\/strong> na cama. = The baby is always turning<\/strong> in bed.<\/p>\n

It can also be translated in some other ways:<\/p>\n

Como voc\u00ea virou<\/strong> professor? = How did you come to be<\/strong> a teacher?
\nEla vai virar uma fera<\/strong> quando vir o que voc\u00ea fez. = He’ll get very angry<\/strong> when he sees what you’ve done.
\nAssistir seriados americanos agora virou moda<\/strong> no Brasil. = Watching American series has now caught on<\/strong> in Brazil.
\nPor que ela virou a cara<\/strong> com voc\u00ea? = Why is she giving you the cold shoulder<\/strong>?
\nO barco virou<\/strong>. = The boat capsized<\/strong>.
\nEssa hist\u00f3ria n\u00e3o vai virar nada<\/strong>. = This story will come to nothing<\/strong>.
\nO esc\u00e2ndalo do governador virou not\u00edcia<\/strong>. = The governor’s scandal hit the headlines<\/strong>.
\nQuando eu mais precisava ela virou as costas para mim<\/strong>. = When I needed her the most she turned her back on me<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As a reflexive verb, virar-se<\/strong> has several meanings too:<\/p>\n

Minha fam\u00edlia se virou contra mim<\/strong>. = My family turned against me<\/strong>.
\nEu precisava de cinco cadeiras, mas vou ter que me virar<\/strong> com duas. = I needed five chairs, but I will have to make do<\/strong> with two.
\nN\u00e3o quero saber a que horas voc\u00ea foi dormir, se vira<\/strong> e esteja l\u00e1 \u00e0s sete e meia. = I don’t care what time you went to bed, just manage to<\/strong> be there at seven-thirty.
\nQuando voc\u00ea se mudar para S\u00e3o Paulo voc\u00ea vai ter que se virar sozinho<\/strong>. = When you move to S\u00e3o Paulo you will have to fend for yourself<\/strong>.
\nEles tinham que se virar<\/strong> com o que ganhavam. = They had to get by<\/strong> with that whey made.<\/p>\n
