Though the most famous part is the Sambodrome parade, the blocos (street parades) are also the mainstay of Rio&#8217;s Carnival.<\/p>\n<p>Over two nights, twelve samba schools parade down the avenue in the Sambodrome for 82 minutes. Judges analyze a number of aspects about each school, including costumes, song, theme, timing, and dancers. Each school picks a different theme and writes a samba to accompany the theme, along with enormous floats and intricate costumes. This year, <a href=\"http:\/\/g1.globo.com\/Carnaval2009\/0,,MUL1018696-16634,00-MILHARES+DE+PESSOAS+PASSARAM+A+NOITE+COMEMORANDO+O+TITULO+DO+SALGUEIRO.html\" target=\"_blank\">Salgueiro took the big prize<\/a> for best school of the year, while Imperio Serrano, which came in last place, will be moved down to the second division of samba schools. <em>Blocos<\/em> are very popular during Carnival, when groups of musicians and drummers march through the streets or stand on flat bed trucks singing, as revelers follow them through the streets.<\/p>\n<p>This year, there were plenty of newsworthy stories. Before Carnival began, there was an <a href=\"http:\/\/g1.globo.com\/Carnaval2009\/0,,MUL1011728-16634,00-PASSISTAS+DA+FINLANDIA+E+DO+JAPAO+MOSTRAM+SAMBA+NO+PE+NO+RIO.html\" target=\"_blank\">international samba event<\/a>, when dancers from all over the world came together to show off their samba skills. There was also a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesofmalta.com\/articles\/viewmedia\/71566\" target=\"_blank\">pet parade in Copacabana<\/a> before the famous parades in the Sambodrome. This year, the samba school Grande Rio did a French theme, and dancers from Paris&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/g1.globo.com\/Carnaval2009\/0,,MUL1011493-16634,00-DANCARINOS+DE+CANCAN+SE+PREPARAM+PARA+SAMBAR+NA+SAPUCAI.html\" target=\"_blank\">Moulin Rouge came to perform<\/a> in the parade. The city mayor tried to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/ap\/article\/ALeqM5jqbd2aX-7Omdk2hd56vpGBV5ZRtwD96F67TG0\" target=\"_blank\">exert control over the city<\/a> during the Carnival chaos, while <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/ap\/article\/ALeqM5iZaZATC-aDaNJ5-8Tli1YSjDh9bwD96G2BVG0\" target=\"_blank\">thousands took to the streets <\/a>to attend the blocos. The Bola Preta bloco <a href=\"http:\/\/g1.globo.com\/Carnaval2009\/0,,MUL1012868-16634,00-COM+MARIA+RITA+E+LEANDRA+LEAL+BOLA+PRETA+ARRASTA+MILHAO+PELAS+RUAS+DO+RIO.html\" target=\"_blank\">attracted the biggest crowd<\/a>, with about a million people in attendance. The two parades of Special Group samba schools went on in all its glory, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/worldNews\/idUSTRE51I4FC20090219\" target=\"_blank\">despite the economic crisis<\/a>, with elaborate and <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/americas\/7905136.stm\" target=\"_blank\">creative costumes and floats<\/a>.
