Today we are going to talk about work, in Portuguese! Check out this dialogue between two friends, Leandro and Renato:<\/p>\n

Leandro<\/strong>: O que foi? Voc\u00ea parece chateado.
\nRenato<\/strong>: Na verdade estou mesmo. Estou cansado de fazer as mesmas coisas chatas entra dia sai dia no meu trabalho. Sabe, preencher fichas e coisas do tipo.
\nLeandro<\/strong>: Voc\u00ea j\u00e1 pensou em procurar um outro emprego?
\nRenato<\/strong>: Claro, estive olhando os classificados no jornal esses tempos.
\nLeandro<\/strong>: Que tipo de emprego voc\u00ea tem em mente?
\nRenato<\/strong>: N\u00e3o sei. Algo mais desafiador. Estou de saco cheio da mesma rotina o dia inteiro.
\nLeandro<\/strong>: Sei o que voc\u00ea quer dizer.<\/p>\n

Leandro notices that Renato is chateado<\/em>, upset, and asks “O que foi?”<\/em>, what’s the matter? Some other ways of asking this are:<\/p>\n

Qual \u00e9 o problema?<\/em>
\n O que est\u00e1 acontecendo?<\/em>
\n O que t\u00e1 pegando? <\/em>(slang)<\/p>\n

Renato agrees with him and uses the expression na verdade<\/em>, which means “actually” or “as a matter of fact”. He could have also said de fato<\/em> or realmente<\/em> to express the same meaning. He says that he is cansado de<\/em>, tired of doing the same boring things, coisas chatas<\/em>, entra dia sai dia, day in day out<\/em>.<\/p>\n

He then uses the verb form sabe<\/em> to create rapport with Leandro, something like you know<\/em>, in English. He’s tired of preencher fichas<\/em>, filling out forms e coisas do tipo<\/em>, and things like that, and stuff. Leandro then asks him if he’s ever thought about looking for another job. He uses the phrase:<\/p>\n

Voc\u00ea j\u00e1 pensou em …?<\/em><\/p>\n

Notice that “ever” is translated as j\u00e1<\/em> in this sentence. J\u00e1<\/em> can also mean “already” or “right now”. Renato says that he’s been taking a look at the job ads in the newspaper. To say that you’ve been doing something in Portuguese you can use:<\/p>\n

Estive\/esteve\/etc + verb in the gerund<\/strong><\/p>\n

Estive lendo v\u00e1rios livros sobre neg\u00f3cios.
\nI’ve been reading several books about business.<\/em><\/p>\n

Ela esteve em negocia\u00e7\u00f5es com aquela empresa.
\nShe’s been negotiating with that company.<\/em><\/p>\n

Leandro asks Renato what kind of job he is looking for:<\/p>\n

Que tipo de emprego voc\u00ea est\u00e1 procurando?<\/em><\/p>\n

You can use Que tipo de…?<\/em> with almost anything:<\/p>\n

Que tipo de<\/strong> filme voc\u00ea gosta?
\nWhat kind of movies do you like?<\/em><\/p>\n

Que tipo de<\/strong> m\u00fasica voc\u00ea costuma ouvir?
\nWhat kind of music do you usually listen?<\/em><\/p>\n

Renato then says he’s looking for something more challenging, desafiador,<\/em> because he’s tired of the same routine, a mesma rotina<\/em> all day long, o dia todo.<\/em> In order to improve your vocabulary, check this out:<\/p>\n

Desafio – challenge
\nDesafiar – to challenge
\nDesafiador – challenging<\/p>\n

Remember to pay attention when you find words that belong to same “family”; they will help you improve your vocabulary enormously.<\/p>\n
