This may be true in some cases but there are some verb phrases that are pretty easy to use, like <strong>shoulda<\/strong> (should have), <strong>coulda<\/strong> (could have), <strong>woulda<\/strong> (would have) and as a bonus, <strong>musta<\/strong> (must have)!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #1f046b;\"><strong>Shoulda!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s take for example these sentences in English:<\/p>\n<p>I should have woken up earlier.<br \/>\nYou shouldn&#8217;t have said that to her.<br \/>\nShould we have arrived already?<\/p>\n<p>In Portuguese we use the verb <strong>dever<\/strong> in the conditional form (<em>deveria, deveria, deveria, dever\u00edamos, deveriam, deveriam<\/em>) + <strong>ter<\/strong> + the <strong>past participle of the main verb<\/strong>. Check out the sentences above in Portuguese:<\/p>\n<p>I <strong>should have woken up<\/strong> earlier.<br \/>\n<em>Eu <strong>deveria ter acordado<\/strong> mais cedo.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You <strong>shouldn&#8217;t have said<\/strong> that to her.<br \/>\n<em>Voc\u00ea n\u00e3o <strong>deveria ter dito<\/strong> aquilo para ela.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Should<\/strong> we <strong>have arrived<\/strong> already?<br \/>\n<em>N\u00f3s j\u00e1 <strong>dever\u00edamos ter chegado<\/strong>?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #1f046b;\"><strong>Coulda!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It works the same way. We use the following phrase: verb <strong>poder<\/strong> in the conditional tense <em>(poderia, poderia, poderia, poder\u00edamos, poderiam, poderiam)<\/em> + <strong>ter<\/strong> + the <strong>past participle of the main verb<\/strong>. Some examples:<\/p>\n<p><em>O Pedro n\u00e3o deveria ter ido fazer trilha sozinho nas montanhas. Ele <strong>poderia ter se perdido<\/strong>!<\/em><br \/>\nPedro shouldn&#8217;t have gone hiking in the mountains by himself. He <strong>could have gotten lost<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p><em>Voc\u00ea n\u00e3o deveria ter atravessado o rio nadando. Voc\u00ea <strong>poderia ter se afogado<\/strong>!<\/em><br \/>\nYou shouldn&#8217;t have swum across the river. You <strong>could have drowned<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>Voc\u00eas n\u00e3o deveriam ter brincado na chuva. Voc\u00eas <strong>poderiam ter pegado <\/strong>um resfriado!<br \/>\nYou shouldn&#8217;t have played in the rain. You <strong>could have caught<\/strong> a cold!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #1f046b;\">Woulda!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Use the phrase: verb <strong>ter<\/strong> in the conditional <em>(teria, teria, teria, ter\u00edamos, teriam, teriam)<\/em> + the <strong>past participle of the main verb<\/strong>. Check out some examples:<\/p>\n<p><em>O que voc\u00ea teria feito? Voc\u00ea <strong>teria feito<\/strong> isso diferente?<\/em><br \/>\nWhat would you have done? <strong>Would<\/strong> you <strong>have done<\/strong> that differently?<\/p>\n<p><em>Se o tempo estivesse melhor, eu <strong>teria ido<\/strong> tamb\u00e9m.<\/em><br \/>\nIf the weather had been better, I <strong>would have gone<\/strong> too.<\/p>\n<p><em>Se voc\u00ea tivesse me dito que n\u00e3o viria, eu <strong>teria pegado<\/strong> um taxi.<\/em><br \/>\nIf you had told me you weren&#8217;t coming, I <strong>would have taken<\/strong> a cab.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #1f046b;\">Musta!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To say that something must have happenend, as in a strong possibility, we use the phrase the verb <strong>dever<\/strong> in the present <em>(deve, deve, deve, devemos, devem, devem)<\/em> + <strong>ter<\/strong> + the <strong>past participle of the main verb<\/strong>. Some examples for you:<\/p>\n<p><em>O Ricardo chegou tarde na aula hoje. Ele <strong>deve ter perdido<\/strong> <strong>hora<\/strong>.<\/em><br \/>\nRicardo came to class late today. He <strong>must have overslept<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><em>O Walter estava de mau humor hoje. Ele <strong>deve ter brigado<\/strong> com sua esposa de novo.<\/em><br \/>\nWalter was in a bad mood today. He <strong>must have argued<\/strong> with his wife again.<\/p>\n<p><em>Voc\u00ea conversou durante o sono ontem. Voc\u00ea <strong>deve ter tido<\/strong> um pesadelo!<\/em><br \/>\nYou talked in your sleep yesterday.
