I was invited by the Real Life English guys and at the meetup I met Leandro Nazar, who&#8217;s an actor and has a very interesting Youtube channel. One of his latest videos is<strong> 11 Coisas que N\u00e3o se Deve Falar no Primeiro Encontro<\/strong> (11 Things Not to Say on a First Date).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">There is even a bonus at the end!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Check out his videos and the 11 things (in Portuguese) below. Make sure to pay attention to the current pronunciation. Sometimes (like in any other language) we drop syllables altogether, so keep practicing!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ubkxG-66upg\">http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ubkxG-66upg<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">1. N\u00e3o pede nada muito caro n\u00e3o, t\u00e1?<br \/>\n2. Se voc\u00ea quiser, perto da minha casa tem uma academia que eles fazem uma promo\u00e7\u00e3o pro seu tipo.<br \/>\n3. T\u00e1 bom, vamos parar de falar sobre voc\u00ea e falar sobre mim agora.<br \/>\n4. Quantos anos que voc\u00ea tem mesmo?<br \/>\n5. Sua m\u00e3e \u00e9 bonita?<br \/>\n6. Voc\u00ea me lembra a Adele.<br \/>\n7. U\u00e9, voc\u00ea veio de pochete?<br \/>\n8. Ent\u00e3o, voc\u00ea joga Minecraft?<br \/>\n9. Voc\u00ea pode pagar dessa vez que eu t\u00f4 desempregado, sabe como que \u00e9, n\u00e9?<br \/>\n10. Quanto que voc\u00ea ganha por m\u00eas?<br \/>\n11. Essa comida tava boa, hein?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">B\u00f4nus!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Quando que \u00e9 sua opera\u00e7\u00e3o mesmo?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Notes<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&#8211; In sentence 2 he says that at this gym they <em>fazem uma promo\u00e7\u00e3o<\/em>. That means that the gym has special membership options, like a discount or a combo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&#8211; In sentence 4 the word <em>mesmo<\/em> (same) is used to ask for repetition. In English we could translate it as &#8220;How old are you again?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&#8211; In sentence 7 the word <em>pochete<\/em> means a fanny pack (in British English, a bum bag). In Brazil we joke that people with big bellies wear fanny packs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&#8211; In sentence 9 the word <em>que<\/em> in &#8220;&#8230;<em>que<\/em> eu t\u00f4 desempregado&#8221; is used to replace &#8220;porque&#8221; (because). This is highly used in informal speech.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&#8211; In sentences 4 and 10 the word <em>que<\/em> is used as a complement in spoken Portuguese.
