I just came back from a teacher’s confererence in Jo\u00e3o Pessoa, in the state of Para\u00edba, and it was fantastic. And today I’m going to teach you (with a little help from Facebook) how to use the slang word “v\u00e9i”.<\/p>\n

The word “v\u00e9i” doesn’t actually exist, you won’t find it in a dictionary. It comes from “velho” (old). Velho is also used when addressing a man, something like “dude”, “guy”, or “man”. Due to “phonetic laziness” some people pronounce the lh<\/em> as an i<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Sometimes you will listen to people saying:<\/p>\n

mui\u00e9<\/em> instead of mulher<\/em>
\nv\u00e9io<\/em> instead of velho<\/em>
\nv\u00e9ia<\/em> instead of velha<\/em><\/p>\n

I found this really funny image that describes how to use the word v\u00e9i – an even shorter version of v\u00e9io<\/em> – in everyday Portuguese.<\/p>\n

Attention! This is used mainly by young males, so be careful if and when you use it.<\/p>\n
