Sorry about the problem&#8211;we&#8217;re working on fixing it.<\/p>\n<p>Check out the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.byki.com\/lists\/Portuguese_brazilian\/Talking-about-movies-01.html\" target=\"_blank\">BYKI list<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p><!--[if gte mso 9]&amp;gt;     &amp;lt;![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]&amp;gt;  Normal 0     false false false  EN-US X-NONE X-NONE                           &amp;lt;![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]&amp;gt;                                                                                                                                            &amp;lt;![endif]--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Today, we\u2019re going to talk about movies. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"float: right\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rendezvoushotels.com\/brisbane\/images\/night%20at%20the%20movies.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"245\" height=\"163\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><em><span>Eu gosto muito de filme.<br \/>\nEstou acostumado a <span> <\/span>ver filmes de a\u00e7\u00e3o ou de drama.<br \/>\nMas de vez em quando, experimento assistir algo diferente.<br \/>\nFui ao cinema ontem, e assisti um filme muito interessante.<br \/>\nVi um document\u00e1rio sobre o aquecimento global.<br \/>\nAntes do filme, vi v\u00e1rios trailers bons do mesmo tipo.<br \/>\nAgora queria ver mais filmes assim.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>In Portuguese, movie is <em>filme<\/em>. <\/span>Here, the speaker says, \u201cI really like movies.\u201d Note that although the noun is used in the singular, it is used to describe the plural. <em>Gostar de<\/em> means to like.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">This means \u201cI usually see action movies or drama.\u201d <em>Estar acostumado a<\/em> means to be used to doing something, but it can also be translated as usually doing something (i.e. <em>estou acostumado a acordar cedo<\/em> \u2013 I\u2019m used to getting up early). Note that <em>a\u00e7\u00e3o<\/em> is action. Some other genres include <em>comedia<\/em> (comedy), <em>romance<\/em> (romance), and <em>infantil<\/em> (for kids).<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cBut once in awhile, I try watching something different.\u201d <em>De vez em quando<\/em> means once in awhile, or sometimes, and a<em>ssistir <\/em>means to watch, like a movie, TV show, or soccer game. <em>Experimentar<\/em> means to try, when we\u2019re discussing doing something for the first time, or trying on clothes (for example: <em>Experimentei a camisa, mas ficou grande \u2013<\/em>I tried on the shirt, but it was too big). We would use <em>provar<\/em> for other cases, like tasting new food <span> <\/span>(i.e. <em>Provei a feijoada ontem e gostei<\/em> &#8211; I tried feijoada yesterday and liked it).<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Here, the speaker says, \u201cI went to the movies yesterday, and I watched a really interesting film.\u201d <em>Cinema<\/em>, which is a masculine noun, means the movies.<span> <\/span>Note that we say <em>ao cinema <\/em>(to the movies), since we are using<em> ir<\/em> (to go) and must include the article (o), which is combined with <em>a<\/em> (to). <em>Ontem<\/em> is yesterday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">This means, \u201cI saw a documentary about global warming.\u201d <em>Document\u00e1rio<\/em> is documentary, and <em>aquecimento global<\/em> is global warming. Note that <em>ver <\/em>in the first person, simple past tense is <em>vi<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cBefore the movie, I saw several good previews for similar movies.\u201d Like in English, we say <em>trailer<\/em> for preview. <em>Mesmo tipo<\/em> means the same type, or similar. Note that when we say before (<em>antes<\/em>), we must add <em>de<\/em>, which in this case becomes <em>do<\/em>, since we have a masculine noun after it (<em>filme<\/em>). If it were a feminine noun, it would become <em>da<\/em> (like <em>antes da apresenta\u00e7\u00e3o<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Finally, this means \u201cNow I want to see more movies like this.\u201d When you use <em>querer<\/em> in the past imperfect tense (<em>queria<\/em>), it expresses a desire to do something in the future, so it could be translated as \u201cI want\u201d or \u201cI\u2019d like.\u201d It\u2019s similar to the conditional of <em>gostar<\/em> (<em>gostaria <\/em>\u2013 I\u2019d like) <em>Assim<\/em> means \u201clike this\u201d or \u201csimilar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--Session data--><\/p>\n<p><!--Session data--><\/p>\n<p><!--Session data--><\/p>\n<p><!--Session data--><\/p>\n<p><!--Session data--><\/p>\n<p><!--Session data--><\/p>\n<p><!--Session data--><\/p>\n<p><!--Session data--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Click here to listen to today&#8217;s podcast!
