In Portuguese grammar we have something called “voz passiva sint\u00e9tica” which is the shortest form of the passive voice. In Portuguese this kind of “voice” doesn’t have a subject so we use the main verb + the particle “se”.<\/p>\n

Instead of overanalyzing it, let me give you some real examples in Portuguese and in English:<\/p>\n

Diz-se que… – It is said that…<\/em>
\nRelata-se que… – It is reported that…<\/em>
\nFala-se ingl\u00eas nos Estados Unidos. – English is spoken in the United States.<\/em>
\nTem-se escrito muito sobre isso. – A lot has been written about this.<\/em>
\nTem-se a impress\u00e3o de que… – One gets the impression that…<\/em>
\nFica-se com a impress\u00e3o de que… – One gets the impression that…<\/em>
\nN\u00e3o se sabe ao certo… – One doesn’t know exactly…<\/em>
\nN\u00e3o se sabe ao certo o que aconteceu. – One doesn’t know exactly what happened.<\/em>
\nNunca se sabe o que fazer… – You never know what to do…<\/em>
\nA gente nunca sabe o que fazer nessas situa\u00e7\u00f5es. – You never know what to do in these situations.<\/em>
\nN\u00e3o se pode trabalhar num ambiente desses. – You can’t work in such an environment.<\/em>
\nN\u00e3o se deve acreditar em tudo o que se l\u00ea. – You shouldn’t believe everything you read.<\/em><\/p>\n

When you want to express this idea in the plural you can use “they” or when it is a broader idea, “somebody” or “someone”.<\/p>\n

Dizem que… – They say that… \/ People say that…<\/em>
\nDizem que ela est\u00e1 gr\u00e1vida. – They \/ People say that she’s pregnant.<\/em>
\nFalam ingl\u00eas tamb\u00e9m no Canad\u00e1. – They speak English also in Canada.<\/em>
\nServem boa comida naquele restaurante. – They serve good food in that restaurant.<\/em>
\nBateram na porta. – Somebody \/ Someone knocked on the door.<\/em>
\nBateram na porta? – Did somebody (anybody) knock on the door?<\/em>
\nVieram te procurar. – Somebody \/ Someone came looking for you.<\/em>
\nJ\u00e1 vieram entregar o pacote? – Has anybody already come to deliver the package?<\/em>
\nPegaram meu l\u00e1pis. – Somebody \/ Someone took my pencil.<\/em>
\nEst\u00e3o tocando a campainha. – Somebody \/ Someone is ringing the bell.<\/em><\/p>\n
