Fiz o check-in, passei pela imigra\u00e7\u00e3o e pela seguran\u00e7a.<\/em><\/p>\n

Depois, esperei no port\u00e3o.<\/em><\/p>\n

Embarquei no avi\u00e3o e achei o meu assento.<\/em><\/p>\n

A aeromo\u00e7a trouxe o jantar e depois fiquei dormindo.<\/em><\/p>\n

Quando cheguei ao aeroporto, passei pela imigra\u00e7\u00e3o de novo e pela alf\u00e2ndega.<\/em><\/p>\n

Finalmente, fui pegar minhas malas na esteira de bagagens.<\/em><\/p>\n

First, the speaker says, \u201cI went to the airport at 4PM.\u201d Note that in Brazil, they use military time, so 4PM translates as 16:00. The past simple of ir<\/strong> (to go) is fui<\/strong> in the first person. When we talk about time, we put a grave accent on the as <\/em>(at), before the number. We also must put horas<\/strong> (hours) after the number when we talk about time. Also note that the preposition for \u201cto\u201d in \u201cto the airport\u201d is ao<\/em> (since airport is a masculine noun and joins with the a, <\/em>which is \u201c<\/em>to\u201d).<\/p>\n

This means: \u201cI checked in (or went to check in) and went through immigration and security.\u201d The past simple of fazer<\/strong> (to make\/do) is fiz<\/strong> in the first person, which is an irregular verb, and the past simple of passar<\/strong> (to pass\/go through) is passei<\/strong> in the first person, which is a regular verb. In Portuguese, check-in is the same as in English, but you pronounce it with a Portuguese accent and use it with fazer<\/em> (to do). Immigration is imigra\u00e7\u00e3o<\/strong>, and security is seguran\u00e7a<\/strong>. Don\u2019t forget the preposition here, which is por<\/strong>, which changes to pela<\/strong>, due to the feminine nouns.<\/p>\n

Here, the speaker says, \u201cThen I waited at the gate.\u201d Depois<\/strong> means after, or then. The past simple of esperar<\/strong> (to wait) is esperei <\/strong>in the first person, and is a regular verb. Gate is port\u00e3o<\/strong>, and is masculine, despite the fact that porta<\/strong> (door), a related word, is feminine. Here, the preposition is em<\/strong>, but becomes no<\/strong>, since it precedes a masculine noun.<\/p>\n

This means: \u201cI boarded the plane and found my seat.\u201d Embarcar<\/strong> means to board or to embark, and in the past simple, first person tense, it becomes embarquei<\/strong>. Note that here, the c<\/em> changes to a qu,<\/em> since you can\u2019t achieve the \u201ckay\u201d sound with a ce<\/em>, and must change it to a q<\/em>. Achar<\/strong> (to find) becomes achei <\/strong>in the past simple, first person. Avi\u00e3o <\/strong>is airplane, and assento<\/strong> is seat.<\/p>\n

Here, he says: \u201cThe flight attendant brought dinner and then I fell asleep.\u201d Aeromo\u00e7a<\/strong> means stewardess, or flight attendant. O jantar<\/strong> means dinner, which can also be a janta<\/strong>. Trazer (to bring) is irregular, and in the first person, past simple becomes trouxe<\/strong> (don\u2019t forget the x, which has an s sound). Ficar<\/strong> (to stay\/become) in the past simple, first person becomes fiquei.<\/strong> Note that again, we must change the c<\/em> to a qu<\/em> to achieve the \u201ckay\u201d sound. Ficar dormindo<\/strong> means to fall asleep.<\/p>\n

This means, \u201cWhen I arrived at the airport, I went through immigration again, and through customs.\u201d Chegar<\/strong>, to arrive, becomes cheguei <\/strong>in the first person, past simple. Again, we use a<\/em> (to) as the preposition, which becomes ao<\/em> because of the subsequent masculine noun. Here, we have to add a u<\/em> to achieve the hard g sound. De novo<\/strong> is \u201cagain.\u201d Alf\u00e2ndega<\/strong> is customs. <\/em>Again, we use passar <\/strong>(to pass\/go through) with por<\/strong>, which becomes pela<\/strong> because of the feminine nouns.<\/p>\n

Here, the speaker says, \u201cFinally, I picked up (or got) my bags at baggage claim.\u201d Finalmente<\/strong> is finally, and mala<\/strong> is suitcase or bag. In this case, my becomes minhas,<\/strong> since we have a plural, feminine noun. Pegar<\/strong> is to pick up, or get. Esteira de bagagens<\/strong> is the actual belt on which the luggage comes, but we can translate it as baggage claim.<\/p>\n
