{"id":6046,"date":"2015-05-18T16:26:31","date_gmt":"2015-05-18T16:26:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/?p=6046"},"modified":"2015-05-18T16:28:20","modified_gmt":"2015-05-18T16:28:20","slug":"regioes-regions-do-brasil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/regioes-regions-do-brasil\/","title":{"rendered":"Regi\u00f5es (regions) do Brasil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">In order to understand Brasil, the language and the culture it is important to know more about each one of the 5\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><i>regi\u00f5es<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0(regions).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Brasil has 27 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><i>unidades federativas<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"> (federative units):<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">* 26 <\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">estados<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000\"> (states)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">* 1 <\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">Distrito Federal<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000\"> (<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Federal District)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The country is divided in 5 regi\u00f5es: Norte (North), Nordeste (Northeast), Centro-oeste (West-Central), Sudeste (Southeast) and Sul (South).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">E<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">ach estado has its own characteristics, <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">culture<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"> and some independence to create its own <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><i>leis<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"> (laws) nowadays. When the <em>portugueses<\/em> colonized Brasil they granted land to Portuguese noblemen or merchants to colonize the land. These lands were called <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><i>capitanias heredit\u00e1rias<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"> (hereditary captaincies) and the devision of these lands evolved <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">in<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">to the estados we have now. Even though the <em>capitanias heredit\u00e1rias<\/em> were rule<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">d<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"> by different people they would still ultimately have to answer to the <em>Coroa Portuguesa<\/em> (Portuguese crown).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Only in 1969 did Brasil finally shap<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">e<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"> the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><i>regi\u00f5es<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">, its <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><i>estados<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"> and <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><i>capitais<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"> to what they are today. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6060\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone post-item__attachment\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.brasilescola.com\/brasil\/regioes-brasileiras.htm\" aria-label=\"Estadosbrasileiros1 300x285\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6060\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6060\"  alt=\"Regi\u00f5es do Brasil\" width=\"300\" height=\"285\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2015\/05\/estadosbrasileiros1-300x285.jpg\"><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6060\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Regi\u00f5es do Brasil<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><b>Norte:<\/b><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">it is <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">the biggest in Brasil (45.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">2<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">% of the land) and the smallest <em>popula\u00e7\u00e3o<\/em>. The equatorial climate makes it hot and humid all year long <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">and most<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"> of the <em>regi\u00e3o<\/em> is covered by Amazon Rainforest. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Because of the late occupation by the Portuguese, this <em>regi\u00e3o<\/em> has many <em>comunidades ind\u00edgenas<\/em> (indigenous <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">communities)<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"> as well as a very preserved ecosystem, which makes ecotourism the main form of tourism. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Even though tourism is a big part of the\u00a0economy there, this <em>regi\u00e3o<\/em> is also greatly responsible for energy production as well as the manufacturing of electronic goods due to the fact that it has a free economic zone called <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><i>Zona Franca de Manaus<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><i>Curiosity:<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"> if you own or have access to any electronic goods made in Brasil, check the back of it for where it was made. It has, however, an immensely rich culture: <em>carnaval<\/em>, <em>forr\u00f3<\/em> (a type o dance\/music), <em>cordel<\/em> (a type of literature) and much more. The poverty and the lack of rain in some areas of <em>Regi\u00e3o Nordeste<\/em> had great cultural influence in music and literature. An example would be this very well-known song called Asa Branca, which is all about the migration to other regions for <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">the hope of a better life.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ASA BRANCA   LUIZ GONZAGA (LEGENDADO)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tl-qyTSsgkM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><b>C<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><b>entro-Oeste:<\/b><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">it is the third biggest regi\u00e3o (18.8% of the land) and it has the second smallest population. Most of the land in this region is used for <em>gado e agricultura<\/em> (grazing and agriculture). It is the least industrialised regi\u00e3o in Brasil and it is based on food and meat processing. This is the regi\u00e3o with the most indigenous groups and <em>parques nacionais<\/em>\u00a0(national parks) created to <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">protect the <em>meio-ambiente<\/em> (environment) as well as the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">indigenous groups <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">in the area. The Chapada dos Guimar\u00e3es is the <em>parque nacional<\/em>\u00a0which attracts the most <em>turistas<\/em>\u00a0for its exquisite nature, rock formation, caves and waterfalls. Website for tourism:\u00a0http:\/\/www.chapadadosguimaraes.com.br<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><b>Sudeste:<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"> it is the second smallest region in Brasil (10.85% of the land) and the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">most <em>populosa<\/em>\u00a0(populous one)<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">. T<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">his is the economic centre of Basil and most big companies have their headquarters there, <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">this is the reason why it is also the region with the two most known cities:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">* Rio de Janeiro attracts the most turistas\u00a0for many reasons such as its international fame, the beaches, the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><i>Cristo Redentor<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"> (Christ the Redeemer statue<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">)<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">, the Carnaval, amongst others.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">*S\u00e3o Paulo: the biggest city in the country and the 12<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"> most populous one in the word.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">state of Minas Gerais <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">the biggest <em>estado<\/em> in this regi\u00e3o,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"> it is known for its gastronomy and it is one of the main destinations for tourists who are interested in <em>hist\u00f3ria<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6061\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone post-item__attachment\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mcgarry\/14504983561\/\" aria-label=\"14504983561 D01e8af137 Z 300x200\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6061\" class=\"wp-image-6061 size-medium\"  alt=\"Photo by Kevin McGarry\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2015\/05\/14504983561_d01e8af137_z-300x200.jpg\"><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6061\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rio de Janeiro &#8211; Photo by Kevin McGarry<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><b>Sul<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">: <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">it is the smallest regi\u00e3o with only three estados and it is the third most <em>populosa<\/em>. This is the only regi\u00e3o where snow is relatively common, especially in the high lands. Regi\u00e3o Sul has a better standard of living with the best social indicators, <em>melhor educa\u00e7\u00e3o e sistema de sa\u00fade<\/em> (best education and health system). There is strong immigrant presence descended from Europeans, which has greatly influenced the culture, cosine as well as architecture.
