That is why Portuguese is overall a wonderful language and fun to learn as a second language! Here, I&#8217;ve made a short list of the most useful expressions that helped me when I was first learning Portuguese.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tranquilo\u00a0<\/strong>This word can be used in a few different ways. Sometimes someone might ask you <em>tudo tranquilo<\/em> (similar to <em>tudo bem<\/em>)? You can say <em>fique tranquilo<\/em> (like <em>calma<\/em>) which basically means relax!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fala s\u00e9rio\u00a0<\/strong>If you say something that is hard to believe or is surprising, someone might say <em>fala s\u00e9rio<\/em>! It literally means &#8220;speak seriously&#8221; as in they don&#8217;t believe what you said, even if they did.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Saudade\u00a0<\/strong>This word has no translation to English and can be used in a few different ways. <em>Estar com saudades<\/em> means to miss something. For example, <em>estou com saudades do Brasil<\/em> (I miss Brazil). <em>Que saudade<\/em> is an exclamation you can make when you truly miss something. <em>Sentir a falta<\/em>\u00a0is another similar phrase. <em>Sinto sua falta<\/em> means I miss you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mana\/mano\u00a0<\/strong>Brazilians call close friends or even their brothers and sisters <em>mana<\/em> (feminine) or <em>mano<\/em> (masculine). It&#8217;s a sign of affection or appreciation of friendship to call a close friend this.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bem\u00a0<\/strong>We know this means &#8220;well.&#8221; But when you&#8217;re speaking casually, you can also use it for emphasis. <em>\u00c9 bem cansativa!<\/em> means it&#8217;s really tiring. <em>\u00c9 bem gostosa!<\/em> means it&#8217;s really delicious.
