Two weeks ago we saw some tips on how to tell the time in Portugu\u00eas<\/em>. This week we are taking one step ahead and learning some expressions and phrases that have the word hora<\/em> (hour\/time).<\/p>\n

  1. Passou da hora<\/strong>. \u2013 translates as \u201cit\u2019s about time\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Exemplo: Melissa tem dezoito anos, passou da hora<\/strong> de ela aprender a cozinhar. \u2013 Melissa is eighteen years old, it\u2019s about time she learned to cook.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    1. Fazer hora<\/strong>. \u2013 translates as \u201cTo waste time\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Exemplo: Desligue este v\u00eddeo game e pare de fazer hora<\/strong>, ou n\u00f3s vamos nos atrasar. \u2013 Turn off this video game and stop wasting time or we will be late.<\/p>\n

       <\/p>\n

      1. Na hora H<\/strong>. \u2013 the literal translation would be \u201cat the H hour\u201d and it is the moment when something is to be decided.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Exemplo: Marcos queria comprar o apartamento, mas desistiu na hora H<\/strong>. \u2013 Marcos wanted to buy the apartment, but he gave up at the last moment.<\/p>\n

         <\/p>\n

          \n
        1. Em cima da hora<\/strong>.<\/strong> \u2013 the literal translation would be \u201con time\u201d. However, there is more to it: it means being neither late nor early. Arriving at the exact time.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Exemplo: Eduardo chegou ao trabalho em cima da hora<\/strong>, mais um minuto ele teria se atrasado para a reuni\u00e3o. \u2013 Eduardo got to work exactly on time, another minute and we would have been late for the meeting.<\/p>\n

           <\/p>\n

          1. Da hora<\/strong>. \u2013 the literal translation would be \u201cof time\u201d and it is used as an adjective for something really cool.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            Exemplo: Esse bar \u00e9 da hora<\/strong>. \u2013 this bar is really cool.<\/p>\n

             <\/p>\n

            1. Deixar para \u00faltima hora.<\/strong> \u2013 translates as \u201cto leave to the last moment\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              Exemplo: Jo\u00e3o deixou<\/strong> o para casa para \u00faltima hora<\/strong>, agora ele n\u00e3o vai ter tempo de fazer. \u2013 Jo\u00e3o left his homework to the last moment, now he\u2019s not going to have time to do it.<\/p>\n

               <\/p>\n

              1. Hora extra<\/strong>. \u2013 translates as \u201covertime\u201d and it is work related.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                Exemplo: Victor est\u00e1 trabalhando muito ultimamente, ele est\u00e1 fazendo muita hora extra<\/strong> para pagar as contas. \u2013 Victor has been working a lot lately, he has been working overtime to pay the bills.<\/p>\n

                  \n
                1. N\u00e3o ver a hora<\/strong>. \u2013 the literal translation would be \u201cnot to see the time\u201d, but you use this expression to say you can\u2019t wait for something to happen.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                  Exemplo: Marcela est\u00e1 gr\u00e1vida de oito meses, ela n\u00e3o v\u00ea a hora<\/strong> do beb\u00ea nascer. \u2013 Marcela is eight months pregnant, she can\u2019t wait until the baby is born.<\/p>\n
