As to be expected, this prefix is a negative one, which negates the second part of the word. But this isn&#8217;t true of every single verb that starts with <em>des<\/em>; we&#8217;ll look at a few of the exceptions.<\/p>\n<p>1. <strong>desconversar<\/strong>: to change the subject. Here, we have des + conversar (to converse), so literally, this could mean to unconverse.<\/p>\n<p><em>Eu mencionei o que aconteceu com o ex-namorado dela, mas ela desconversou.<\/em> I mentioned what happened to her ex-boyfriend, but she changed the subject.<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>desbloquear<\/strong>: to unblock, to release.\u00a0 Bloquear (to block), with des as a prefix, most logically becomes unblock. This can also be used when referring to cell phones; unblocking the cell phone allows use you to use a SIM card from any phone company in Brazil.<\/p>\n<p><em>O ladr\u00e3<\/em><em>o aprendeu como desbloquear celular, e colocou o pr\u00f3<\/em><em>prio chip dentro do telefone roubado.<\/em> The robber learned how to unblock cell phones, and put his own chip in the stolen phone.<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>desocupar<\/strong>: to vacate. Ocupar (to occupy), along with the des prefix, tranlates to unoccupy.<\/p>\n<p><em>Os executivos desocuparam a sala antes do almo\u00e7o<\/em>. The executives vacated the room before lunch.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Exceptions<\/span><\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>desenvolver<\/strong>: to develop. Though envolver means to involve, adding the -des changes the meaning.<\/p>\n<p><em>O engenheiro ir\u00e1<\/em> <em>desenvolver um novo modelo.<\/em> The engineer is going to develop a new model.<\/p>\n<p>5. <strong>desenhar<\/strong>: to draw, design.<\/p>\n<p><em>A crian<\/em><em>\u00e7a desenhou uma imagem de uma casa e a fam\u00ed<\/em><em>lia dela.<\/em> The child drew a picture of a house and her family.<\/p>\n<p><!--Session data--><\/p>\n<p><!--Session data--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today, we&#8217;re going to discuss verbs that start with des.
