This is for all the food lovers out there: some expressions that are a piece of cake to learn.<\/p>\n

  1. Mam\u00e3o com a\u00e7\u00facar \u2013 papaya with sugar<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Explica\u00e7\u00e3o: you say something is \u201cpapaya with sugar\u201d when it is easy to do, it would be the equivalent of \u201cpiece of cake\u201d in English.<\/p>\n

    Exemplo: Aquela prova de Portugu\u00eas estava t\u00e3o f\u00e1cil, foi mam\u00e3o com a\u00e7\u00facar. \u2013 That Portuguese test was so easy, it was \u201cmam\u00e3o com a\u00e7\u00facar\u201d.<\/p>\n

    1. Colocar a m\u00e3o na massa \u2013 to put your hands in the dough.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Explica\u00e7\u00e3o: it means to be involved with the work you are doing, do the job yourself.<\/p>\n

      Exemplo: Maria cansou de esperar e colocou a m\u00e3o na massa para terminar o projeto. \u2013 Marina got tired of waiting and \u201ccolocou a m\u00e3o na massa\u201d to finish the project.<\/p>\n

      1. Encher lingui\u00e7a \u2013 to fill in the sausage<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Explica\u00e7\u00e3o: when you have to write an X number of words and you run out of ideas you start to \u201cencher lingui\u00e7a\u201d, meaning writing useless information or paraphrasing yourself in order to get more words in.<\/p>\n

        Exemplo: Depois de escrever 800 palavras eu comecei a encher lingui\u00e7a para completar as 1000 que o professor mandou. \u2013 After writing 800 words, I started to \u201cencher lingui\u00e7a\u201d in order to reach the 1000 words the teacher assigned.<\/p>\n

        1. Falar abobrinha \u2013 to speak little zucchini<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Explica\u00e7\u00e3o: you say someone speaks little zucchinis when they are not making any sense or do not know what they are talking about.<\/p>\n

          Exemplo: Gustavo n\u00e3o sabia nada sobre o assunto e acabou falando abobrinha. \u2013 Gustavo did not know anything about the subject so he ended up \u201cfalando abobrinha\u201d.<\/p>\n

          1. Viajar na maionese – to travel on the mayonnaise<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            Explica\u00e7\u00e3o: to imagine something farfetched.<\/p>\n

            Exemplo: Bruno disse que o carro dele chega a 200km\/h. Acho que ele viajou na maionese. \u2013 Bruno said his car reaches 200km\/h, I think he \u201cviajou na maionese\u201d.<\/p>\n

            1. Mudar da \u00e1gua para o vinho \u2013 to change from water to wine<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              Explica\u00e7\u00e3o: when someone suddenly starts being well mannered when it is not usual for them to do so.<\/p>\n

              Exemplo: Quando sua m\u00e3e chegou Milena mudou da \u00e1gua para o vinho. \u2013 When her mother arrived Milena \u201cmudou da \u00e1gua para o vinho\u201d.<\/p>\n

              1. Ter est\u00f4mago de avestruz \u2013 to have an ostrich\u2019s stomach<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                Explica\u00e7\u00e3o: you say someone has an ostrich\u2019s stomach when they can food that most people would not.<\/p>\n

                Exemplo: Quando viajamos pela \u00c1sia Carlos comeu barata frita. Ele tem est\u00f4mago de avestruz. \u2013 When we travelled around Asia Carlos ate deep fried cockroaches. He has \u201cest\u00f4mago de avestruz\u201d.<\/p>\n
