Today, we\u2019re going to learn useful language for the pharmacy.<\/p>\n

This means, \u201cHello, here is my prescription. \u201c As a reminder, \u201col\u00e1\u201d is the formal way to say hello, as opposed to \u201coi\u201d which means hi. \u201cReceita\u201d is prescription. Though you\u2019re not saying \u201cmy\u201d directly (which would be \u201cminha\u201d or \u201cmeu\u201d), it is implied in context. You can use \u201caqui est\u00e1\u201d when presenting something to someone.<\/p>\n

Here, the speaker says, \u201cI need this medication.\u201d\u00a0 Note that we put \u201cde\u201d and \u201ceste\u201d together to form \u201cdeste\u201d (this). \u201cPrecisar\u201d is to need, and \u201drem\u00e9dio\u201d is medication. When a noun follows \u201cprecisar,\u201d we add a \u201cde\u201d as a preposition to the noun.<\/p>\n

This means, \u201cMy doctor prescribed an antibiotic.\u201d \u201cM\u00e9dico\u201d is doctor, and \u201cprescrever\u201d is to prescribe. Antibiotic is simply \u201cantibi\u00f3tico.\u201d Don\u2019t forget the accent when you write it. Though doctors will indicate the best antibiotic to take, you can actually buy antibiotics without a prescription in Brazilian pharmacies.<\/p>\n

The speaker says, \u201cThe medication is called Azitromicina, a generic brand.\u201d \u201cMedicamento\u201d is just another way to say medication or prescription drug.\u00a0 \u201cChamar-se\u201d means to be called. For your information, Azitromicina is in fact a brand of antibiotics in Brazil, should you ever need it. \u201cMarca\u201d is brand, and \u201cgeneric\u201d is \u201cgen\u00e9rico\u201d which in this case is feminine because of the noun. Generic drugs are common in Brazil and are very cheap.<\/p>\n

This means, \u201cThe doctor also said I should take Paracetamol for the fever.\u201d \u201cDizer\u201d (to say) in the past simple tense is irregular, and becomes \u201cdisse\u201d in the third person. \u201cTamb\u00e9m\u201d means also. \u201cDever\u201d means to should, and we put it in the conditional tense to indicate a potential desire or order to do something.\u00a0 \u201cTomar\u201d is to take, as in medication and food\/drinks. \u201cFebre\u201d is fever, and is a feminine noun. Paracetamol is in fact a fever medication, like Tylenol.<\/p>\n

Here, the speaker says, \u201cOh! I would also like some eye drops.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cAh\u201d is commonly used as an interjection in Portuguese, like we\u2019d use \u201coh!\u201d in English. \u201cQuerer\u201d (to want) in the past imperfect tense indicates a desire, like putting to like in the conditional tense.\u00a0 \u201cCol\u00edrio\u201d is eye drops.<\/p>\n

This means, \u201cCan I pay with a credit card? Thank you.\u201d \u201cCart\u00e3o\u201d is understood to mean credit card, even though the full expression is \u201ccart\u00e3o de cr\u00e9dito.\u201d You can use the present simple tense in the first person\u00a0 (posso) for \u201cpoder\u201d (to be able to), but you could also use it in the third person (pode), which would mean something like \u201cIs it possible to.”<\/p>\n
