(Hey guys, did you week get off to a good start?)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you study Portuguese or is just interested in the language, you definitely came upon the character <\/span><b>\u00e7<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at some point. But what does this squiggly line under the letter <\/span><b>c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> mean? The cedilla, known in Portuguese as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">cedilha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is actually a mark under the letter <\/span><b>c<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">used to indicate that the pronounciation of the word is more similar to an<\/span><b> s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(a soft sound)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8211; as in sopa (soup) &#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">than to a <\/span><b>k <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(a hard sound)- as in carro (car). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is most common in Portuguese, French, and Catalan, and originated in Spain (as a diminutive for the letter <\/span><b>z<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">thus meaning \u201clittle z\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You must find it familiar because of the word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">fa\u00e7ade<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in English &#8211; loaned from French (possibly the only one in the English language).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2016\/06\/CEDILHA.png\" aria-label=\"CEDILHA\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7072\"  alt=\"CEDILHA\" width=\"508\" height=\"561\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2016\/06\/CEDILHA.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2016\/06\/CEDILHA.png 508w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2016\/06\/CEDILHA-317x350.png 317w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 508px) 100vw, 508px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><b>\u00e7 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">only used<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> before the vowels \u00a0<\/span><b>a, o, u<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; as in pra\u00e7a (square), cansa\u00e7o (tiredness) &#8211; and<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> never <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">before<\/span><b> e<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>i <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8211; before those we can just use the regular <\/span><b>c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as in cidade (city) e certeza (certainty).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sometimes a verb uses the letter <\/span><b>c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, but its derivative needs the cedilha:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">agradecer (to thank) &#8211; agrade\u00e7a, agrade\u00e7o <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">comparecer (to attend) &#8211; compare\u00e7a, compare\u00e7o <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">esquecer (to forget) &#8211; esque\u00e7a. esque\u00e7o <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">crescer (to grow) &#8211; cres\u00e7a, cres\u00e7o <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">vencer (to win) &#8211; ven\u00e7a, ven\u00e7o<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">parecer (to seem) &#8211; pare\u00e7a, pare\u00e7o<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">convencer (to convince) &#8211; conven\u00e7a, conven\u00e7o<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Agrade\u00e7a<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> sua v\u00f3 pelo presente (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thank<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> your grandma for the gift)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sempre me <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">esque\u00e7o<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> de trancar a porta (I always <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">forget <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to lock the door)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here are some examples of palavras (words) that use the cedilha:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>cole\u00e7\u00e3o<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211;
