A semana de voc\u00eas come\u00e7ou bem? (Hey guys, did you week get off to a good start?)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you study Portuguese or are just interested in the language, you definitely came upon the character <\/span><b>~<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at some point. But what does this squiggly line that appears over vowels mean? The tilde, known in Portuguese as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">til<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was originally an abbreviation of the letter <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">m<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. So it is a mark used to indicate the nasalisation of vowels. \u00a0This means that the pronounciation of the word is produced with the air vibrating in your nose. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You may recognize the graphic sign from Spanish. But note that, in Spanish, the tilde can be seen above the letter <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, as in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">espa\u00f1ol<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ma\u00f1ana<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. In Portuguese, however, we only use it above the vowels <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">o<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">til<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> can be identified in the following forms: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00e3, \u00e3e, \u00e3o, \u00f5e<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and in the plural form:<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00f5em, \u00e3s \u00e3es, \u00e3os, \u00f5es.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For example: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Uma mam\u00e3o \u2013 dois mam\u00f5es (one papaya, two papayas)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Um caminh\u00e3o &#8211;
