As a national fixation and one of the favorite forms of entertainment <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">no pa\u00eds<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (in the country) &#8211; along with soccer, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">novelas <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">are a Brazilian television staple and, as such, an intrisic part of our culture. Therefore, watching them is an excellent way to immerse yourself in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">idioma <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(language), improve your <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">habilidades<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (skills) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">aprender mais<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (learn more) about Brazilian daily life, customs and habits. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These serial dramas usually run for about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">cento e oitenta<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (a hundred and eighty) 45-minute episodes, during the span of less than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">um ano<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (a year) and are shown <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">durante <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(during) prime time, broadcast by main television networks, like Globo, Record, Bandeirantes and SBT. Successful productions have found a great market worldwide, being exported to many regions of the globe, such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">outros <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(other) Portuguese-speaking countries, Europe and Asia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With a cast of about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">quarenta<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (forty) actors and actresses, the storylines fall within various categories, from romantic comedies to historical romances, tipically depicting <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">as vidas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (the lives) of the the lower, middle and upper class, including a main plot and various subplots taking place in different settings. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Poder<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (power), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">gan\u00e2ncia <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(greed), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">corrup\u00e7\u00e3o <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(corruption), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ambi\u00e7\u00e3o <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(ambition), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">amizade<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (friendship), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">amor <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(love) and forbidden passions are all common themes adressed in the shows. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Al\u00e9m disso<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (besides), dramatic and emotional situations filled with plot twists, domestic conflict, family sagas, ill-fated romantic couples, villainous and heroic figures are crucial elements in the plot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Much of the <i>novelas<\/i> appeal also lies in their ability to reflect <i>sociedade<\/i> (society) and relate to large audiences from distinct social backgrounds. As a highly influential phenomenon that plays a large role in Brazilian media and culture, these narratives have been shaping behaviors since their debut on TV, becoming a vehicle to transmit ideologies and deal with a wide variety of often taboo and controversial issues, such as drug abuse, racism, poverty, sickness, urban violence and sexuality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brazil\u2019s most recent <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sucesso<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (hit) was the record-breaking <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Avenida Brasil <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Brazil Avenue), a revenge tale set in the Rio de Janeiro slums that reached 50 million viewers, earning over an unprecedented 1 billion dollars in revenue, becoming one of the most-watched in the country.
