How was your week?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You\u2019re probably aware that, a few <em>meses<\/em> (months) ago, former president Dilma underwent an impeachment process and was replaced by current president Michel Temer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(As we\u2019ve discussed in this post: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/brazilian-politics-the-impeachment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/brazilian-politics-the-impeachment\/<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brazil\u2019s new president is facing low popularity ratings after his government proposed controversial reforms. Their act of political resistance is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">agora<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (now) widespread throughout the nation, actively engaged in protesting against the hugely contested measures and reforms that will profoundly alter the school system and living conditions in Brazil. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Protesters have organized to currently reside in the schools under occupation, where they bathe, have meals, do the cleaning. Ocuppations forced the suspension of regular activities such as<em> aulas<\/em> (classes) and <em>servi\u00e7os<\/em> (services). Instead, workshops, lectures and discussions are being held there. For example, subjects at secondary level, such as Arts, Physical Education, Sociology and Philosophy will be removed from the curriculum as mandatory, becoming optional. Another previous demand that becomes optional is a teaching license, a measure that de-professionalizes the field and requires only that teachers prove a \u2018notorious knowledge\u2019 in the subject.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These policies were passed with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">with no debate or discussion to include and consult popular opinion, producing a sense of revolt among the population, particularly <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">professores<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (teachers) and students who are most <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">afetados<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (affected) by the reform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The PEC 241<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> restricts the expenditure of the federal government for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">vinte<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (twenty) years<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, that is, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">at\u00e9<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (until) 2037<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This means a constitutional change that will lead <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0to an end of public subsides, freezing the investments in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">educa\u00e7\u00e3o<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (education) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sa\u00fade<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (healthcare). Therefore, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">haver\u00e3o<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (there will be) drastic cuts in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">budget allocated to education, welfare and social programs <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">por duas d\u00e9cadas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (for two decades).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">lguns<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (some) defend <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0these austerity measures presented by the president, claming that they are<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em> a \u00fanica maneira<\/em> (the only way) to rescue the country from its deep crisis and economic recession by reducing national debt and bringing stability to the country\u2019s financial situation. Others, in turn, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">argue that these plans are too severe and will inevitably result in a\u00a0significant decline in the <em>qualidade<\/em> (quality) of services and well being.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The current political situation is chaotic and uncertain. But let\u2019s keep hoping and keep on struggling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tenham uma boa semana!
