The project was envisioned and built in the \u201880s by Bernardo Paz, a successful magnate and businessman in the area of mining and metallurgy, who used to be married to the famous Brazilian artist Adriana Varej\u00e3o. With the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ajuda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (help) of the renowned landscaper Roberto Burle Max, Paz turned his estate into a striking<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> jardim bot\u00e2nico<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (botanical garden) sprawled with galleries and installations, with artworks by influential artists of national and international fame.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Previously a private property, it was only open to public visitation in 2006. Currently, it welcomes about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">trezentos mil<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (300 thousand) visitors <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">por ano<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (per year).\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2011, Inhotim became a part of the Brazilian government&#8217;s official botanical garden association.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The origin of the name: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Legend has it that the property used to be <em>uma fazenda<\/em> (a farm) back in the day. Its former owner was an English man called Timothy. Locals claim that the name was derived from \u201cMister Tim\u201d, in Portuguese, \u201cSenhor Tim\u201d, or \u201cNh\u00f4 Tim\u201d, in the shorter, informal version. There are around<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> quinhentas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (500) art pieces by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">cem <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(100) different artists of over <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">trinta<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (30) nationalities. Their impressive artistic collection includes <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">esculturas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (sculptures), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">pinturas <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(paintings), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">desenhos <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(drawings),<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> fotos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (photographs) and videos, many of which are displayed in the natural surroundings of the museum\u2019s area, which makes it such an unique and one-of-a-kind experience.
