Hey, you guys! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Have you ever come across the word \u201cficar\u201d? If so, you may have noticed that is very common in Brazil and we use it constantly. But it doesn\u2019t always mean the same thing!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Like in English, Portuguese has many versatile verbs that have multiple meanings that change depending on context. You don\u2019t always get this on textbooks, because it can sometimes be colloquial, so keep that in mind. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mas n\u00e3o fiquei chateado! In the sense that something is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">getting <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">different. Take a look at the examples below:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Meu irm\u00e3o <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ficou <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">doente depois que pegou chuva (My brother<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> got <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sick after being caught in the rain)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Meu pai <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ficou <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">muito preocupado quando perdeu o emprego (My father <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">got <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">really worried when he lost his job)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Eu <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">fico <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">b\u00eabada s\u00f3 com uma cerveja (I <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">get <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">drunk with just a beer)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Minha m\u00e3e<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> ficou<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> cansada de tanto trabalhar (My mom <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">got <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">tired from so much work)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Meu cabelo <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ficou<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> todo molhado com a chuva (My hair<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> got <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">all wet from the rain)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Note: these are different from: ela est\u00e1 chateada (he <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">upset), ele est\u00e1 preocupado (he <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> worried), eles est\u00e3o felizes (they<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> are<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> happy), because they indicate a present state<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But <\/span><b>ficar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> can also signal at something that stays or remains, indicating permanence.
