2016 – Que ano! What a year!<\/span><\/p>\n

Ano passado <\/span><\/i>(last year) certainly had its share of memorable events, from the glorious olympics to a turbulent political crisis, <\/span>entre outros<\/span><\/i> (among other). So let\u2019s take a look at this 2016 retrospective <\/span>para lembrar<\/span><\/i> (to remember) the most striking facts and episodes of the past year: <\/span><\/p>\n

Olimp\u00edadas – Olympics<\/b><\/p>\n

Brazilians and the whole <\/span>mundo<\/span><\/i> (world) eagerly tuned in to watch the 2016 Summer Olympics held in Rio de Janeiro and other Brazilian metropoles in agosto (August). We hosted over <\/span>dez mil <\/span><\/i>(ten thousand) athletes. The United States led the medal table, with a total of 121 <\/span>medalhas<\/span><\/i> (medals), 46 of which were de <\/span>ouro<\/span><\/i> (gold). Brazil ranked 13th, but the <\/span>sete<\/span><\/i> (seven) gold medals won were our highest record so far. <\/span><\/p>\n

Despite some polemic subjects surrounding the event, such as health issues about the zyca virus outbreak, political crisis and infrastructure problems, the Olympics turned out to be a great reason for joy and <\/span>orgulho<\/span><\/i> (pride). Urban renovations in the areas were competitions were to take place were also a positive outcome.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another major event were the paralympics, involving <\/span>atletas<\/span><\/i> (athletes) with disabilities. The paralympic<\/span> jogos<\/span><\/i> (games) are an important milestone for the achievement of equal rights. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For many <\/span>raz\u00f5es<\/span><\/i> (reasons), Cannes was a major event for Kl\u00e9ber Mendon\u00e7a Filho\u2019s movie <\/span>Aquarius. <\/span><\/i>Besides competing for the treasured prize, crew members and cast saw the ceremony as a<\/span> oportunidade<\/span><\/i> (opportunity) to protest the<\/span> golpe <\/span><\/i>(coup) taking place in Brazilian politics, positioning themselves in favor of former president Dilma Roussef. Signs that read \u201cBrazil is not a democracy anymore\u201d, <\/span>\u201c54,501,118 votes set on fire!\u201d and \u201cThe world cannot accept this illegitimate government\u201d were held.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aquarius was supposed to be Brazil\u2019s official entry for the Academy Awards. Instead, the Ministry of Culture submitted the drama <\/span>Little Secret <\/span><\/i>to represent the country, in a supposed retaliation of the <\/span>governo<\/span><\/i> (government).<\/span><\/p>\n

Starring Brazil\u2019s eternal diva S\u00f4nia Braga, <\/span>Aquarius<\/span><\/i> narrates the tale of a fierce retired music critic, struggling with a construction company who insists – on many levels – that she leave her place to give way to a luxury sea side apartment complex. If not for the controversy, <\/span>Aquarius <\/span><\/i>should be watch at least for being <\/span>um \u00f3timo filme<\/span><\/i> (a great film) with wonderful performances and intriguing plot. <\/span><\/p>\n

Elei\u00e7\u00f5es – Elections<\/b><\/p>\n

While the USA saw the surprising rise and consequent <\/span>vit\u00f3ria <\/span><\/i>(victory) of Donald Trump in the presidential elections, Brazilians had the direito (right) to vote for mayor and city counsils of their <\/span>escolha <\/span><\/i>(choice) in <\/span>outubro<\/span><\/i> (October) for the municipal elections. Our <\/span>pa\u00eds<\/span><\/i> (country) has over 5500 municipalities in 26 <\/span>estados<\/span><\/i> (states), so local voting was a major national event.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is important to note that, in order to <\/span>encorajar <\/span><\/i>(encourage) voters to participate, voting is <\/span>obrigat\u00f3rio<\/span><\/i> (compulsory), unlike in the United States. Literate citizens whose<\/span> idade<\/span><\/i> (age) is between 18 and 70 must attend election centers or fill a justification form. Failing to do so may incur penalties, such as paying <\/span>multas<\/span><\/i> (fines) and being unable to obtain a passport or ID card. <\/span><\/p>\n

November 28th was a bleak day for Brazilian soccer lovers, and for the nation as a whole after the <\/span>not\u00edcia <\/span><\/i>(news) of the tragic plane crash transporting the Chapecoense soccer squad – a club based in the <\/span>cidade<\/span><\/i> (city) of Chapec\u00f3, in the <\/span>sul<\/span><\/i> (south) of the country. They were headed for Medell\u00edn, in Colombia<\/span> para jogar<\/span><\/i> (to play) the 2016 Copa Sul-Americana. Reports and investigation say that aviation regulations were not observed for the <\/span>voo<\/span><\/i> (flight), including fuel exhaustion, denied permission to land, possible electrical failures and reckless flight planning, causing the aircraft to crash. 71 of the 77 <\/span>pessoas <\/span><\/i>(people) on board didn\u2019t survive the accident. Authorities are now persecuting those responsible for the series of human errors in the ill-fated flight. <\/span><\/p>\n

After the misfortune, the opponent team, Atl\u00e9tico Nacional, granted Chapecoense the tournament title as an honor to the victims. <\/span><\/p>\n
