As we all know, the event is an element of our national culture and widely celebrated throughout the nation, in addition to being a major <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">feriado<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (holiday). People even tend to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">dizer<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (say) \u201cO ano s\u00f3 come\u00e7a depois do <\/span><b>Carnaval<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d, meaning that \u201cthe year only begins after carnaval\u201d. How about we focus on the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">passado<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (past), then, and learn a little more about history of <\/span><b>Carnaval<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Although it is a typically Brazilian <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">festa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (party), its precise origins are uncertain and carnaval is known to be celebrated <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">no mundo todo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (worldwide). Commonly referred to as Mardi Gras in the US or Shrove Tuesday in England, these festivals are held all over Europe and America.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is said that <\/span><b>Carnava<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">l has both pagan and catholic origins, dating back to the egyptians\u2019 and romans\u2019 and their celebrations. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ent\u00e3o<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (so), <\/span><b>Carnaval <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">has historical roots from classic antiquity.\u00a0Extravagant fun, games, masked balls, music, dancing and drinking have<i> sempre <\/i>(always) been characteristic of those days. And still are!<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">palavra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (word) allegedly comes from the latin expression <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">carnis levale<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (translated as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">adeus \u00e0 carne<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; farewell to the meat)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> related to a period of fasting which occured <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">antes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (before) easter. It is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">agora <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(now) known as quaresma (lent), <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">when many religious people abstain from something. In Brazil, it is traditional to make a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">promessa <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(promise), that is, you renounce something that you really gosta (like), for example: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">beber<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (drinking), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">comer carne<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (eating meat), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">fumar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (smoking), and only resume it when it\u2019s easter. This cultural manifestation has gained immense proportions (it is one of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">maiores<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; biggest in the world), millions of people crowd the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ruas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (streets), the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">desfiles <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(parades) and competitions between <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">escolas de samba<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (samba schools) are<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> even broadcast on television networks, which attracts thousands of tourists. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Carnaval in Brazil usually starts at around cinquenta (50) days before easter and it <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">dura<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (lasts) for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">quatro<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (4) days.
