When most people think of Carnaval in Brazil, they think about the big parades in Rio de Janeiro or S\u00e3o Paulo with their decorated floats, gorgeous women dancing samba and adorned in [just] glitter, and percussion bands.\u00a0 Others also think of the carnaval street parades in Bahia where the biggest <\/span>Ax\u00e9<\/span><\/em> stars parade around in floats with their bands and screaming and dancing party-goers are at their sides for days on end.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

What most people don\u2019t know is, Brazilians still celebrate to this day, the most original form of carnaval, the <\/span>carnaval de rua<\/span><\/em> \u2013 literally \u201cstreet carnaval.\u201d\u00a0 These festivities usually last from the Friday-Tuesday before Ash Wednesday of every year. <\/span><\/p>\n

Many small towns in the Northeast, such as Recife, and Ouro\u00a0 Preto in Minas Gerais are famous for their <\/span>carnavais de rua<\/span><\/em> where they parade around in <\/span>blocos<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0 There are bands and parades and costumes but the people who make them come alive are the carnaval goers themselves! \u00a0Many other smaller towns in the <\/span>interior<\/span><\/em>, or countryside all over the country celebrate carnaval this way, and this year I\u2019m going to join in on the <\/span>folia<\/span><\/em>!!<\/span><\/p>\n

Some Carnaval vocabulary:<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>Escola de Samba<\/span><\/em> \u2013 Samba school \u2013 the organizations that put together individual parades in Rio de Janeiro & S\u00e3o Paulo<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>Bloco carnavalesco<\/span><\/em> \u2013 A group of people who parade during Carnaval in a semi-organized fashion, usually wearing the same costume<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>Carro aleg\u00f3rico<\/span><\/em> \u2013 Carnaval floats <\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>Samb\u00f3dromo <\/span><\/em>\u2013 Architectural space where Carnaval parades are held.\u00a0 Usually made up of stands and catwalk-type space for the parade<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>Abad\u00e1<\/span><\/em> \u2013 costume carnaval goers purchase in order to take place in <\/span>blocos carnavalescos<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n
