Hey, everyone!<\/p>\n<p>Today we see part two of our previous post on how to avoid certain mistakes that are common in the Portuguese language. Bom trabalho!<\/p>\n<h2><b>Meio-dia e meia (certo)\/ Meio-dia e meio (errado)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">12h30pm reads \u201cmeio dia e <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">meia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d, not \u201cmeio dia e meio\u201d because <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">meia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (half) refers to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">meia hora<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (half an hour). Hour, in Portuguese, is a feminine word. Therefore, 12h30 is to say, implicitly \u201cmeio dia e meia hora\u201d (half a day plus half an hour). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The same goes for 12h30am, which is \u201cmeia noite e <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">meia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7603 size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/06\/pub-350x95.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"95\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/06\/pub-350x95.png 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/06\/pub-768x208.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/06\/pub-1024x278.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/06\/pub.png 1482w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>Descri\u00e7\u00e3o\/Discri\u00e7\u00e3o<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With very similar pronunciations and written forms, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">descri\u00e7\u00e3o<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">discri\u00e7\u00e3o<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> have very distinct meanings. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Descri\u00e7\u00e3o<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> means <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">description<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">discri\u00e7\u00e3o<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> means <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">discretion<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. So it\u2019s very important not to mix the two! Look:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Agrade\u00e7o pela sua <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">discri\u00e7\u00e3o<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> ao lidar com o assunto &#8211; I appreciate your <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">discretion <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">when dealing with the issue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Os policiais pediram para a v\u00edtima uma <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">descri\u00e7\u00e3o<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> do assaltante &#8211; The cops asked the victim for a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">description<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of the robber<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pela <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">descri\u00e7\u00e3o <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">no site, o hotel parece ser \u00f3timo &#8211; By the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">description<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on their website, the hotel seems great<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marcos n\u00e3o sabe se comportar com <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">discri\u00e7\u00e3o<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, est\u00e1 sempre gritando &#8211; Marcos can\u2019t behave with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">discretion<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, he\u2019s always shouting<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7604 size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/06\/blev-350x95.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"95\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/06\/blev-350x95.png 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/06\/blev-768x208.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/06\/blev-1024x278.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/06\/blev.png 1482w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>Sess\u00e3o\/Se\u00e7\u00e3o<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Again, another case of two words that sound exactly the same, but mean different things. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sess\u00e3o<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with two \u2018s\u2019 is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">session<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">se\u00e7\u00e3o<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with the \u2018\u00e7\u2019 is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">section<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sil\u00eancio! A <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sess\u00e3o<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> vai come\u00e7ar! &#8211; Silence! The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">session<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is about to begin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">O sorvete se encontra na <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">se\u00e7\u00e3o<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> de congelados do supermercado &#8211; Ice cream is found in the frozen <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">section<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of the supermarket<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">My dad only reads the sports <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">section<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in the newspaper &#8211; Meu pai s\u00f3 l\u00ea a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">se\u00e7\u00e3o<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> de esportes do jornal<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Aonde\/onde<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Though both <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">aonde<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">onde<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> mean <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">where<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in English, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">aonde<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> suggests that someone is going somewhere and carries the idea of movement and displacement, whereas <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">onde<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> indicates the place where something or someone is and it is related to permanence. See:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Voc\u00ea sabe <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">onde <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">est\u00e3o minhas chaves? &#8211; Do you know <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">where<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> my keys are?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Aonde<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> voc\u00ea vai a esssa hora? &#8211; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Where<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> are you going at this hour?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A cidade <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">onde<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> ele mora \u00e9 perigosa &#8211; The city <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">where<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> he lives is dangerous<\/span><\/li>\n<li><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Aonde<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> voc\u00eas v\u00e3o depois do trabalho? &#8211; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Where <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">are you going after work?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Tr\u00e1s\/traz<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There is no distinction beetween them is spoken language, Tr\u00e1s is an adverb of place that means back (and is always preceded by a preposition), while traz is the verb to bring in the third person singular. Take a look: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dinheiro n\u00e3o <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">traz<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> felicidade &#8211; Money doesn\u2019t<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> bring<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> happiness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">N\u00e3o adianta olhar para<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> tr\u00e1s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> agora &#8211; There is no point in looking <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">back<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> now<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Crian\u00e7as tem que viajar no banco de <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">tr\u00e1s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; Children must travel on the<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> back<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> seat<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Meu namorado<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> traz<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> caf\u00e9 na cama par mim todas as manh\u00e3s &#8211; My boyfriend <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">brings<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> me breakfast in bed every morning<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00c9 isso!
