The text is called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A melhor coisa do avi\u00e3o \u00e9 o que ele ainda n\u00e3o tem<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (The best thing about an airplane is what it still hasn\u2019t got) again by Brazilian comedian Greg\u00f3rio Duvivier from his weekly column at <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Folha de S\u00e3o Paulo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> newspaper. It is about riding airplanes, in-flight entertainment, fear of flying and so on. You can try reading it out loud to practice your pronunciation and speaking skills, or play the audio again and follow as you listen. Acho o avi\u00e3o a coisa mais m\u00e1gica e mais divertida que j\u00e1 foi inventada. Fico mais tranquilo a 11 mil metros de altitude do que pisando em terra firme. Tenho vontade de cutucar as pessoas do meu lado: &#8220;Voc\u00ea tem no\u00e7\u00e3o do milagre que \u00e9 a gente estar voando?&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">S\u00e3o mil op\u00e7\u00f5es de entretenimento, que v\u00e3o desde a leitura das instru\u00e7\u00f5es de sobreviv\u00eancia at\u00e9 a privada que parece que vai te engolir (quando pequeno imaginava meu coc\u00f4 caindo l\u00e1 do alto e tomava o cuidado de evacuar em \u00e1reas inabitadas), passando pelos mil filmes e s\u00e9ries e pela comida quentinha e pela bebida liberada e pelas nuvens vistas de cima. Mas s\u00f3 percebi, quando anunciaram que o voo teria wi-fi, que a maior vantagem de todas n\u00e3o \u00e9 o que avi\u00e3o tem, mas o que ele n\u00e3o tem (ou tinha): internet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Part 2:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">O avi\u00e3o, assim como algumas praias paradis\u00edacas e a Coreia do Norte, n\u00e3o tem internet, e isso, perceba, \u00e9 uma del\u00edcia. O mundo pode acabar e voc\u00ea n\u00e3o vai ficar sabendo. A leitura flui como em nenhum outro lugar. O sono tamb\u00e9m. Assisto a filmes e quase sempre me emociono (o fato de servirem vinho em voos internacionais contribui, \u00e9 claro).\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">O \u00fanico supl\u00edcio do voo pra mim \u00e9 a curta dura\u00e7\u00e3o: sempre dura menos do que deveria e acabo n\u00e3o lendo ou dormindo tudo o que eu queria. OK, \u00e9 verdade que nunca fui pra \u00c1sia. Mas sempre que pego a ponte a\u00e9rea queria que durasse mais um pouquinho: o pouso me pega toda vez de surpresa, como um pai que vai buscar o filho no pula-pula. &#8220;Mas j\u00e1, papai?&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Part 3:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sim, eu sei que essa paz t\u00e1 com dias contados. V\u00e1rios voos j\u00e1 tem wi-fi e muito em breve um avi\u00e3o sem internet vai ser t\u00e3o inimagin\u00e1vel quanto um avi\u00e3o com \u00e1rea de fumantes. Sim, crian\u00e7as, podia-se fumar no avi\u00e3o. N\u00e3o, isso n\u00e3o deixou saudades.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ah, dir\u00e1 o leitor, mas voc\u00ea pode colocar o celular em modo avi\u00e3o. Sim, mas voc\u00ea sabe, leitor c\u00ednico, que existem poucas coisas t\u00e3o irresist\u00edveis quanto internet, e sabe que, se houver wi-fi, eu vou me conectar, e voc\u00ea tamb\u00e9m, e de repente aquilo vai virar um inferno de celulares apitando, tremendo e assobiando, e uma saraivada de \u00e1udios do WhatsApp vai se unir a uma tempestade de stories do Instagram.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Enquanto isso n\u00e3o acontece, da pr\u00f3xima vez que entrar num avi\u00e3o, aproveite pra lembrar: o mundo j\u00e1 foi assim, quietinho. Que del\u00edcia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The best thing about an airplane is what it still hasn\u2019t got<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Part 1:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I&#8217;ve never been afraid of airplanes, on the contrary. I think airplanes are the most magical and funnest things ever invented. I&#8217;m more peaceful at 11,000 meters than standing on solid ground. I want to nudge people next to me: &#8220;Do you have any idea of the miracle that it is to be flying?&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are a thousand entertainment options, ranging from reading the survival instructions to the toilet one that seems to swallow you up (when I was little I imagined my poop falling from above and made sure to evacuate in uninhabited areas), through a thousand films and shows and by the warm food and the open bar and the clouds seen from above. But I just realized, when they announced that the flight would have wi-fi, that the biggest advantage of all is not what a plane has, but what it does not have (or had): the internet.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Part 2:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The plane, like some paradisiacal beaches and North Korea, has no internet, and that, you see, is a delight. The world may end and you will not know. Reading flows like nowhere else. Sleeping as well. I watch movies and almost always get excited (the fact that they serve wine on international flights contributes, of course).\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The only torment of flying for me is the short duration: it always lasts less than it should and I end up not reading or sleeping everything I wanted. Okay, it&#8217;s true I&#8217;ve never been to Asia. But whenever I take the air-bridge I want it to last a little longer: the landing catches me every time by surprise, like a father picking up his son from the bounce house. &#8220;Already, daddy?&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Part 3:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yes, I know this peace will be over soon. Several flights already have wi-fi connection and very soon a plane without internet will be as unimaginable as a plane with a smoking area. Yes, children, you could smoke on a plane. No, we do not miss it.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Oh, the reader will say, but you can put the phone on airplane mode. Yes, but you know, cynical reader, there are few things as irresistible as the internet, and you know that if there&#8217;s wi-fi, I&#8217;ll connect, and so will you, and suddenly it&#8217;s going to turn into a hell of cell phones beeping, vibrating and whistling, and a bunch of WhatsApp audios will join a storm of Instagram stories.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While that does not happen, next time you get on a plane, take the time to remember: the world has already been this way, quiet.
