Hey, guys!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Possibly one of the greatest challenges for Portuguese learners is mastering the large variety of time tenses in our language. With that in mind, we are going to run a new post series with the aim of showing and explaining verbs in the past, present and future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Then let\u2019s start with an easy one, the <\/span><b>present continuous<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, also known as present progressive, a verb tense used to talk about what is happening at the moment. Therefore, the <\/span><b>present continuous<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> indicates an action that is still going on or that is prolonged in time without being finalized yet, thus expressing the idea of duration and continuity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7665 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/08\/vvf-350x135.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"135\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/08\/vvf-350x135.png 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/08\/vvf-768x295.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/08\/vvf-1024x394.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/08\/vvf.png 1514w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In English, we form the <strong>present continuous<\/strong> with the <em>verb to be<\/em> in the present plus a<em> verb in the <\/em><\/span><em><b>ING<\/b><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, as in: I<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> am speak<\/span><\/i><b><i>ing<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, we <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">are walk<\/span><\/i><b><i>ing<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The good news is that the same goes for Portuguese! The present continuous is composed of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">verbo estar\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(to be) in the present and a verb in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ger\u00fandio <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(gerund), with the ending <\/span><b>NDO<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">First of all, let\u2019s review the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">verbo estar\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in the present:<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">eu estou (I am)<\/span><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ele\/ela est\u00e1 (he\/she is)<\/span><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">voc\u00ea est\u00e1 (you are)<\/span><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">n\u00f3s estamos (we are)<\/span><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">voc\u00eas est\u00e3o (you are)<\/span><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">eles est\u00e3o (they are)<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Take a look at how verbs are formed in the <em>gerund<\/em>, that is, <em>the verb root + the ending <strong>NDO<\/strong><\/em>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-7670\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/08\/flds-1-1024x394.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/08\/flds-1-1024x394.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/08\/flds-1-350x135.png 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/08\/flds-1-768x295.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/08\/flds-1.png 1514w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sorrir = sorr + ndo = sorri<strong>ndo<\/strong> (to smile &#8211; smiling)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">viver = viv + ndo = vive<strong>ndo<\/strong> (to live &#8211; living)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">andar = and + ndo = anda<strong>ndo<\/strong> (to walk &#8211; walking)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">abrir = abr + ndo = abri<strong>ndo<\/strong> (to open &#8211; opening)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">correr = corr + ndo = corre<strong>ndo<\/strong> (to run &#8211; running)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">falar = fal + ndo = fala<strong>ndo<\/strong> (to talk &#8211; talking)<\/p>\n<p>Now read some samples sentences in the present continuous in Portuguese and see if you get the general idea:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Esperem por mim, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">estou<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">chega<\/span><\/i><b><i>ndo<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Wait for me, I<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019m com<\/span><\/i><b><i>ing<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">O que voc\u00ea <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">est\u00e1 faze<\/span><\/i><b><i>ndo<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> aqui t\u00e3o tarde?
