{"id":77,"date":"2007-09-07T09:56:59","date_gmt":"2007-09-07T13:56:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/?p=77"},"modified":"2014-07-18T15:52:59","modified_gmt":"2014-07-18T15:52:59","slug":"brazilian-independence-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/portuguese\/brazilian-independence-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Brazilian Independence Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Sete de Setembro<\/b> <em>the 7th of September<\/em> is Brazilian Independence Day.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/TLBlog\/Portuguese\/2007\/08\/why-do-brazilians-speak-portuguese-1.html\">another post<\/a> I provided a brief synopsis of the events leading up to the 7th of September, 1822. On this historic day, Dom Pedro I declared Brazil an independent nation, allegedly tearing the Portuguese insignia from his uniform and swearing: &#8220;By my blood, by my honor and by God: I will make Brazil free!.&#8221; He declared the official motto, now known as the <strong>Grito do Ipiranga<\/strong>: <b>Independ\u00eancia ou Morte<\/b>. This phrase is dear to my heart as it echoes the American General John Stark&#8217;s famous words: &#8220;<b>Live free or die<\/b>,&#8221; now the official motto of my home state (New Hampshire), and the most famous of all American state mottos.<\/p>\n<p>Brazilian independence was hard-fought, and certainly did not occur on the 7th of September. The Portuguese colonial forces still had to be forced to withdraw from the Americas, to which end Dom Pedro I hired British naval commander Admiral Thomas Cochrane.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nBrazil was recognized internationally as a sovereign nation on August 29, 1825. In 1889, Dom Pedro I&#8217;s successor, his son Dom Pedro II, ended his reign as emperor and Brazil was proclaimed a Republic.<\/p>\n<p>Happy Brazilian Independence Day!!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gosouthamerica.about.com\/od\/brahistory\/qt\/IndependenceDay.htm\">source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sete de Setembro the 7th of September is Brazilian Independence Day.
