Hey guys!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s time for another one of our listening and reading exercises for the month. The text chosen for this instalment is called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">O menino, o lobo e o sapo na \u00e1gua fervendo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (The boy, the wolf and the frog in boiling water) by comedian Greg\u00f3rio Duvivier. The text draws on fables to comment on Brazil\u2019s current moment of political instability. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Don\u2019t forget to follow the steps:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Listen to the audio first. See if you can identify any words and write them down, if you want to.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Scroll down and read the text. You can try reading it out loud to practice your pronunciation and speaking skills, or play the audio again and follow as you listen. Leia\/ Rea<\/b><b>d<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><b>O menino, o lobo e o sapo na \u00e1gua fervendo<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Parte 1:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Reza a met\u00e1fora que, se voc\u00ea joga o sapo na \u00e1gua fervendo, ele pula fora, mas se voc\u00ea joga na \u00e1gua fria e vai esquentando a \u00e1gua aos poucos, ele n\u00e3o percebe e morre cozido. Pura lenda urbana (na verdade, rural -dificilmente voc\u00ea encontrar\u00e1 sapos pra ferver na cidade). Recentemente, bi\u00f3logos fizeram o teste e descobriram que o sapo, ao perceber que est\u00e1 virando caldo, pula fora da panela, estragando ao mesmo tempo a sopa e a met\u00e1fora. Malditos bi\u00f3logos. Que obsess\u00e3o em estragar met\u00e1foras.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A par\u00e1bola servia muito bem para explicar um fen\u00f4meno t\u00e3o comum quanto dif\u00edcil de entender: por que as pessoas demoram tanto a pular fora de casamentos falidos, empregos deprimentes e governos autorit\u00e1rios. O ser humano demora pra perceber que a \u00e1gua est\u00e1 fervendo -e inventou a met\u00e1fora do sapo, coitado, logo ele que \u00e9 t\u00e3o melhor que a gente na sensibilidade \u00e0 fervura.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Parte 2:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Seria mais justo se os sapos usassem, entre eles, a met\u00e1fora do humano. &#8220;Tadinhos, os seres humanos n\u00e3o percebem o momento em que a democracia vira uma ditadura, da\u00ed v\u00e1rios s\u00e3o brutalmente assassinados.&#8221; &#8220;Mas eles merecem&#8221;, dir\u00e1 outro sapo. &#8220;Sempre espalham inverdades sobre nossa esp\u00e9cie, como aquela da \u00e1gua fervendo, ou aquela outra sobre o fato de n\u00e3o lavarmos o p\u00e9.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Existe uma f\u00e1bula que os bi\u00f3logos ainda n\u00e3o estragaram, e que toda crian\u00e7a mentirosa j\u00e1 ouviu -ou seja, toda crian\u00e7a. Um menino todo dia grita &#8220;lobo!&#8221;, mas nunca tem lobo nenhum: tudo o que ele queria era um pouco de aten\u00e7\u00e3o, e talvez uns &#8220;likes&#8221;. Resultado: no dia em que finalmente tinha lobo, ningu\u00e9m acreditou, e o menino morreu devorado.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Parte 3:\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Na nossa adolesc\u00eancia, a gente gritou &#8220;fascista!&#8221; pro chefe careta, pra professora exigente, pro tio rabugento. A palavra passou a significar &#8220;aquele de quem a gente discorda&#8221;, tanto pra direita quanto pra esquerda. Talvez seja o caso de resgat\u00e1-la, ou quem sabe inventar alguma palavra nova pro que est\u00e1 acontecendo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jovens usam camiseta com estampa &#8220;Ustra vive&#8221; em homenagem a torturador. Santander Cultural cede a press\u00e3o e cancela exposi\u00e7\u00e3o de &#8220;arte degenerada&#8221;. Juiz pr<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">o\u00edbe pe\u00e7a de teatro que &#8220;desrespeita a religi\u00e3o&#8221;. Cantor sertanejo defende que nunca houve ditadura no Brasil, apenas &#8220;militarismo vigiado&#8221;. Candidato que quer cancelar tratados de direitos humanos \u00e9 o que mais cresce nas pesquisas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A \u00e1gua est\u00e1 esquentando, pessoal. E tem sapo achando que \u00e9 jacuzzi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><strong>The boy, the wolf and the frog in boiling water<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Part 1:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Legend has it that, if you throw a frog into boiling water, it jumps out, but if you throw in cold water and slowly heat the water, it does not notice and is cooked to death. Pure urban legend (in fact, rural &#8211; you&#8217;ll hardly find frogs to boil in the city). Recently, biologists tested it and discovered that the frog, realizing that it is becoming broth, jumps out of the pan, at the same time ruining the soup and the metaphor. Damn biologists. What an obsession with ruining metaphors.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The parable served very well to explain a phenomenon as common as it is difficult to understand: why do people take so long to jump out of failed marriages, depressing jobs, and authoritarian governments. The human being is slow to realize that the water is boiling &#8211; and we were the one who invented the metaphor of the frog, the poor fellow, who is so much better than us in sensitivity to boiling.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Part 2:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It would be fairer if the frogs used, among them, the metaphor of the human. &#8220;Poor things, human beings do not realize the moment when democracy becomes a dictatorship, hence several are brutally murdered.&#8221; &#8220;But they deserve it,&#8221; another frog will say. &#8220;They always spread untruths about our species, like that of boiling water, or that about the fact that we do not wash our feet.&#8221;*<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There is a fable that biologists have not yet spoiled, and every lying child has heard &#8211; that is, every child. A boy every day cries &#8220;wolf!&#8221; But there is never a wolf: all he wanted was a little attention, and maybe some &#8220;likes&#8221;. Result: On the day there was finally a wolf, nobody believed him, and the boy was eaten.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">*note: \u201cthe frog doesn\u2019t wash his feet\u201d is a popular children\u2019s song in Brazil.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Part 3:<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> In our teens, we shouted &#8220;fascist!&#8221; at our annoying boss, at the demanding teacher, to the grumpy old man. The word came to mean &#8220;the one we disagree with,&#8221; both to the right wing and the left wing. Maybe it&#8217;s time to rescue it, or maybe invent some new word for what&#8217;s happening.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Young people wear t-shirts with the words &#8220;Ustra lives&#8221; in tribute to a torturer*. Santander Cultural gives in to pressure and cancels an exhibition of &#8220;degenerate art&#8221;**. A judge bans a play that &#8220;disrespects religion.&#8221; A sertanejo*** singer argues that there was never a dictatorship in Brazil, only &#8220;vigilant militarism&#8221;. A candidate who wants to cancel human rights treaties is the fastest growing in the polls.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The water is heating up, folks.
