Feliz ano novo a todos! Happy New Year\u2019s, everyone!\u00a0<\/span>Since it is our last post of the year, our listening and reading practice of the <\/span>m\u00eas<\/span><\/i> (month) is going to be a special one: a New Year\u2019s <\/span>poema<\/span><\/i> (poem) by the celebrated modernist poet Carlos Drummond de Andrade<\/span> (1902-1987)<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although he graduated in Pharmacy, Drummond never practiced it, choosing rather to work as a civil servant who was actively involved in the cultural and intellectual movements of his time. In addition to a prolific career in <\/span>poesia<\/span><\/i> (poetry), he was also a journalist and wrote many short stories, children\u2019s books and chronicles. So nothing like a Brazilian cultural symbol to wrap up this year and <\/span>come\u00e7ar<\/span><\/i> (start) a new one!<\/span><\/p>\n

n\u00e3o apenas pintado de novo, remendado \u00e0s carreiras,<\/span><\/p>\n

mas novo nas sementinhas do vir-a-ser;<\/span><\/p>\n

at\u00e9 no cora\u00e7\u00e3o das coisas menos percebidas<\/span><\/p>\n

novo, espont\u00e2neo, que de t\u00e3o perfeito nem se nota,<\/span><\/p>\n

mas com ele se come, se passeia,<\/span><\/p>\n

se ama, se compreende, se trabalha,<\/span><\/p>\n

voc\u00ea n\u00e3o precisa beber champanha ou qualquer outra birita,<\/span><\/p>\n

n\u00e3o precisa expedir nem receber mensagens<\/span><\/p>\n

passa telegramas?)<\/span><\/p>\n

N\u00e3o precisa<\/span><\/p>\n

fazer lista de boas inten\u00e7\u00f5es<\/span><\/p>\n

para arquiv\u00e1-las na gaveta.<\/span><\/p>\n

N\u00e3o precisa chorar arrependido<\/span><\/p>\n

pelas besteiras consumidas<\/span><\/p>\n

nem parvamente acreditar<\/span><\/p>\n

que por decreto de esperan\u00e7a<\/span><\/p>\n

a partir de janeiro as coisas mudem<\/span><\/p>\n

e seja tudo claridade, recompensa,<\/span><\/p>\n

justi\u00e7a entre os homens e as na\u00e7\u00f5es,<\/span><\/p>\n

liberdade com cheiro e gosto de p\u00e3o matinal,<\/span><\/p>\n

direitos respeitados, come\u00e7ando<\/span><\/p>\n

pelo direito augusto de viver.<\/span><\/p>\n

Para ganhar um Ano Novo<\/span><\/p>\n

que mere\u00e7a este nome,<\/span><\/p>\n

voc\u00ea, meu caro, tem de merec\u00ea-lo,<\/span><\/p>\n

tem de faz\u00ea-lo novo, eu sei que n\u00e3o \u00e9 f\u00e1cil,<\/span><\/p>\n

mas tente, experimente, consciente.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c9 dentro de voc\u00ea que o Ano Novo<\/span><\/p>\n

cochila e espera desde sempre.<\/span><\/p>\n

New Year’s recipe<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

For you to earn a wonderful New Year<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

with the color of the rainbow, or the color of your peace,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

New Year without comparison with all the time already lived<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

(badly lived perhaps or meaningless)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

for you to earn a year<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

not only painted again, mended,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

but new in the seeds of becoming;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

new<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

even in the heart of things less perceived<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

(starting with the inside)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

new, spontaneous, so perfect it cannot be noticed,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

but with him one eats, one walks,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

one loves, one understands, one works,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

you do not need to drink champagne or any other drink,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

you do not need to send or receive messages<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

for the consumed nonsense <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

nor to believe<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

that by decree of hope<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

from January things will change<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

and may all be clarity, reward,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

justice between men and nations,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

freedom with smell and taste of morning bread,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

respected rights, starting with<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

by the august right to live.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

To earn a New Year<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

that deserves this name,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

you, my dear, have to deserve it,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

you have to make it new, I know it’s not easy,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

but try, experiment, conscious.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

It is within you that the New Year<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

naps and waits forever.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n
