What does the World Cup Sticker Album teach us about economy?

Part 1: 2018 is World Cup year. And, just before that, the sticker album craze begins. This gives us an opportunity to talk a little about economics. The case of the stickers is interesting because it is a market. Full of imperfections, of course. And it is in these imperfections that lie the fun. I’ll explain. The market is an institution that enables people to make tradeoffs. For example, an architect designs a house and receives money for the service. With money, he can buy the most varied things for himself and his family: food, clothing, home, transportation, etc.

Part 2: Note that he has traded his architecture project for a lot of other things he needs, which brings a huge gain in well-being. He does not have to spend his spare time sewing clothes for his children, for example. In addition, of course, to having access to a wide variety of products and services. Money plays a fundamental role in the functioning of modern markets, for it spares us of the need for such a “double coincidence of wants.” Think about the market without money. The architect, needing to buy clothes, would need to find a weaver; and not just a weaver, but one who is willing to receive an architectural project in exchange for the clothes he produces.

Part 3: It seems almost impossible, right? Faced with this difficulty, the architect would have to waste time producing his own clothes. Maybe he won’t even become an architect after all. Money unlocks this mechanism: the architect receives money for his services and uses it to buy clothes; the weaver can then use it to buy whatever he wants.

BACK TO THE STICKERS

Completing a nearly 700-page album without resorting to trading is a difficult and costly task. In the beginning, when the album is still empty, buying some packages in the newsstand allows you to stick several stickers. But as you fill out the album, you begin to realize that you have several repeated stickers. You have to trade them. That is, go to the market.

You can find the full text here:

https://www1.folha.uol.com.br/colunas/por-que-economes-em-bom-portugues/2018/04/o-que-as-figurinhas-da-copa-ensinam-sobre-economia.shtml?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newscolunista
